Toyota 4 Runner --- Tires? Best kind?

I know Dunloop, Michelin, Firestone, Bridgestone are all name brand tires.. I am looking for a good tire but was told other tires are as good as these. Should I trust a name I never heard before?

Are there tire brands I should avoid? I have a 1998 Toyota 4 runner and I need four new tires.
 
When I bought my tires I looked in the Consumers Guide. They tested and rated many different brands. I bought the top rated which for my car were Goodyear. Your 4 Runner is a whole different vehicle. Check it out. Can find the right issue at the library.
