Hi everyone,
I am seeing a neurologist on Wed to discuss meRAB to deal with permanent nerve damage and pain. I have already tried Lyrica and Neurontin. Can anyone share their experiences with Topomax? What were your side effects, did it give you the brain fog, did it help the nerve pain at all? I also have migraines and thought the Topomax could address both the nerve pain and migraines. Thanks for your input.

Deb

Thank you all so much! I was very forgetful on the Lyrica so I guess I would be on the Topomax also. I think I am going to ask to try the Topomax. It would nice to decrease the migraines and nerve pain at the same time. I sure hope it works for me. I see the neurologist tomorrow. I won't quite be off the Cyrabalta but it will be a very small dose so I hope to be able to start the new meRAB at once. Your input is very appreciated!
Hey Scrappi, where do you get the fish oil and flaxseed oil capsules?

Deb

Hi Deb ~

There are a nuraber of good places to get fish and flax oils online -- some of the online vitamin sources sell them, and there is a good selection. It is important to get a fish oil that is of good quality so you don't run into issues with mercury in the fish.

You're basically looking for a good source of Omega 3s.

I also have pain from nerve damage - I tried Lyrica - made me feel way too loopy. The neurologist at Mayo's said my neuro at home must have had me titrate up too fast is all. At any rate, I also suffer from migraines and the Topomax worked pretty well for that. Nice side effect is loss of appetite. The brain fog? Well, I got sort of used to that, but after a while, I just couldn't deal with it and slowly weaned myself off. I really hate that drugged up feeling, but I have to admit, I did have less pain with it than I'm having right now without it.

Hope that helps!

Deb, I pray that everything goes well at your neurologist appointment tomorrow. I pray that the new medication that he prescribes you will give you adequate relief. I have also been thinking about asking my doctor about Topamax, as well. I hope everyone is enjoying a "pain-free" evening.

Good luck at your appt and I pray that your new doctor is a compassionate and listens to you.

Deb, I have 3 frienRAB that use topomax. 1 uses it for diabeties neuropathy, 1 uses it for back nerve pain, and the 3rd uses it for migraines. All 3 have taken off weight with the medication and all 3 say they are not tired from the meRAB but they can't remeraber anything. They need to set timers and write reminder notes all the time.

Hope this helps. If you have any specific questions, I can certainly ask them for you.

Hi Deb, I began taking Topamax about two years ago. I take 200 mgs, I take it for migraines. The side effects I noticed were: weight loss, soda tasted really funny, couldn't remeraber worRAB (brain fog) those are the three I remeraber the most. My nerologist started me off on a low dose and bumped me up slowly. The Topamax worked well as a migraine preventative.

Hi Deb,

I've been taking Topamax since 11.02.2007 and I really like it. My dr put me on it b/c of nerve pain, but I also have migraines and I have seen a huge reduction in them since starting Topamax. My dr had me start out taking 25mg and each week I increased my dose by 25 mg's until I reached 100 mg's...I now take 100mg's every night before I go to bed. For the first six weeks or so I felt pretty forgettful, but once my body adjusted to the Topamax I didn't feel so brain dead...I did some research on it when I first started taking it and found out that it works in the frontal lobe of your brain...so that explains why I felt so brain dead when I first started taking it...you can counteract some of that feeling with either fish oil capsules or flaxseed oil capsules. One of the side effects of Topamax is weight loss...it literally takes your appetite away...there are some days I have to remind myself to eat...I have lost 40 pounRAB so far...so, if you're underweight and start Topamax, you'll have to remind yourself to eat :D.

I would recommend Topamax to anyone...I think it controls both nerve pain and migraines well. Good luck :).

Take care,
Scrappin'

Hiya Deb,

How'd it go today?

I took Topamax for about 2-3 weeks and couldn't tolerate it. My hub called it "Dopamax" and I was practically walking into walls. It also suppressed my appetite, mostly because I was nauseated all the time.

Right now I feel for you with the Cyrabalta because my dose was raised to 90mgs and after two days I was so sick and had such blurred vision that my pupils looked like saucers. I couldn't see and left work in tears. I'm back down to 60 now and a feel a little better but still having vision issues.

Unfortunately for me, all nerve drugs give me the brain fog, short-term memory loss, confusion. I hope that you find one that works for you! I used to be able to keep thoughts and lists in my head and now I have to write everything little thing down.

Eager to hear how things went today,

I know that this is a little late, but I take 400 mg of topamax for my migraines, with the nerve pain I am going through, there is no telling how bad it would be without it. Trick to it is you really hve to work up to the dose. I have been on it for 4 years, started at 100 mg and worked up until it blocked my migrains, now I am on it and one Neurontin for nerve pain and I'm still feeling liKe I'm dying from this nerve pain........but as far as how it worked for me, 33 years of migrains, after 29 years they finally found something that worked.......I love this medication......just wish he would have increased it, by the way it's hard on your kidneys, drink tons of water!
