Topic for world civilization project?

I'm taking World Civilizations this semester and I have a presentation due on Monday. The only problem is, I don't have a topic quite yet.

Basically, what we are to do is choose a topic(circa 1500 or earlier) and do the history of it.

For example, here are some of the presentations that people in my class have presented so far:

-History of Perfume
-History of Contraception
-History of Weddings
-History of Tattoos
-History of Dutch Shoes
and etc...

But I'm drawing a blank about coming up with a topic because I want it to be something interesting so if anyone could help me come up with something, I would greatly appreciate it.
 
The invention of the compass
A compass is a navigational instrument for determining direction relative to the Earth's magnetic poles. It consists of a magnetized pointer (usually marked on the North end) free to align itself with Earth's magnetic field. The compass greatly improved the safety and efficiency of travel, especially ocean travel:
1492: Christopher Columbus and his crew sailed into the Caribbean.
1498: Vasco da Gama discovered a sea route through the Cape of Good Hope, from Europe to India
