Toonzone Talkback - FUNimation Licenses "Rosario+Vampire", "Chaos;Head", & More

More than a few of those aren't available for US licensing, fyi. And I don't think Stich counts since that's Disney 100%. Point taken though. I should have said "Funi has a massive load of Madhouse these days."

Question. If one hasn't read the R+V manga, would one still get enjoyment out of the show and its sequel? I guess what I'm asking is, does the show(s) suck from a "it's not like the manga" standpoint, or "it's poorly written no matter if it follows the manga or not" standpoint?

GUNxSWORD -which already has a good dub and deserved a rescue (for those wondering, the whole "bride" thing is more of a barely present joke than anything else)- and Rideback are pretty much the two most interesting shows in this list as far as I can tell.

Don't really know or care about most of the rest, to be honest, but I suppose at least a couple of them should have the sales potential to make up for their licensing costs if nothing else. Take that as you will.

Yeah, that would be something of a pity. Though I imagine it's not like they really need to do too much since those are previously released materials anyway, so we'll see.

I think so too. I really loved it.

And you know what, is Fasalina any worse than say, anything else aired in adult Ameican cartoons. [strike]Okay, maybe there was that one instance when she totally got it on with Wendy's brother but that's not so bad[/strike]

And that's why it would be better than some of what's coming down the pipe (Kekkaishi)

As for FUNI channel...who gets it? I don't. Do I need to trade up for FiOS?

Not much that can be done about it. That's just a guess, but I'd rather have low expectations to begin with and see them exceeded than vice versa.

...which is an awesome concept in and of itself, but I think you can still enjoy the show even if all the references, homages or rip-oRAB fly over your head.

Well my expectations for anime on TV this year have been practically nonexistent, what with such masterpieces as Kekkaishi airing. It'd be nice to get something in GunxSword's vein, but unless you have the FUNi channel, doubtful.

The manga was just taken waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too seriously. That's why probably I didn't like it so much.

I did read the first volume of it's "second season" (can manga even do that?), and it was actually prety enjoyable.

Yeah, because it's on the basic FiOS package. Just don't expect the whole FUNi library on at any given time.

Meanwhile, I hope FUNi isn't setting themselves for trouble with so many licenses. Unlike ADV, they better not be going into debt to do this.

Here's Geneon's old Gun X Sword trailer. Mmmm, shiny.

Yeah, I won't be surprised if two or three of these don't move that much and end up in the S.A.V.E line pretty quick. Chaos;head and Chrome Shelled Regios come off as rather average from what I've been seeing said about them, though maybe at least one of the two will surprise (if only in terms of sales). I'm not sure about Rosario since there seems to be a considerable gap between those that like the manga and those who see the anime as something that badly missed the mark. On another front though, if they didn't have to shell out much for Strike Witches, I really don't like to think that they were delusional enough to think it'd be worthwhile to make a bigger investment on a low-rent clunker like Heaven's Lost Property. We'll probably never know, but I doubt there was exactly much competition to get it.

I think another round of licenses like this could well end up being too ADV-esque for Funi on the whole this year, but we'll see. The summer is yet young, and in contrast to the the arguable mid-tier stuff there have been more interesting highlights like Rideback and the Tsubasa OVA's. There's even balance in the continuing license rescues this year--Chobits (CLAMP, kinda ecchi), FLCL (Gainax insanity!), Trigun (everybody's favorite space western) and Gun X Sword (the show that probably wishes it were Trigun but is probably still pretty cool). There's a thick line dividing diversity and a strategy where you throw the proverbial dart at the wall to see what sticks, but maybe they're still walking it.
