What the [Cleveland]?!

I be-cleve the worst convention The Cleveland Show inherited from Family Guy is the watering hole.
Clevelands drinking buddies are rarely funny and would be better left as colorful neighbors and work characters. And now that he has Terry to drink with while riding around in the cable van, the bar scene is unnecessary.

Personally, I think the show still relies too heavily on Family Guy to get laughs. There's way too many cameos and references to FG, and it's hard for a spinoff to stand on it's too feet when it uses the original series as a crutch for laughs.

"Black Family Guy" pretty much fits it to a tee.

The jokes, the cutaway gags... the overall feel and tone of the show is FG. It has it's minor differences (at least Donna isn't a terrible mother, like Lois), but for the most part, it's way too similar in many aspects.

Honestly? I still can't help but question why this show even exists to begin with. Cleveland is no lead man; he was a mildly amusing supporting character from another show, and that's about it. He's not the kind of guy to build an entire series around. The whole concept just feels lazy. It's basically a "take a character people know, give them their own show/spin-off = instant hit" type of situation.

Obviously, some creative thinking and originality did go into this, so I can't help but question; why not create a series focusing on one of the original characters created instead? Heck, I would have much more easily embraced a show starring the Bear family, rather than anything revolving around Cleveland Brown. At the very least, it's an original idea, and doesn't feel quite as much like a cheap knock-off.

The show just feels incredibly forced in my humble opinion. Granted there are some nice ideas, but at the same time it's just bogged down by some odd banality. The execution, the main characters, hell even the supporting characters are not very charming. I mean seriously, I can't really get behind Cleveland's bar buddies except the bear. The redneck is too rednecky and the hipster's just... too pathetic to be considered funny.

Also not to mention the season finale was one of the most smug displays I've ever seen in a show, with Earth, Wind, and Fire, and a scroll up to the logo of The Cleveland Show. Ugh.

Count me in as one of the few who think it's a black family guy.
Most of Cleveland's friends are that great except for Tim the Bear and Terry (Cable guy).
If only the writers could try to distance the show away from FG.
