This is the talkback thread for Media Blasters Announces New January '10 Titles Including "Ikki Tousen DD" Vol. 2.

One of these days I'll have to start Genshiken. It sounRAB like a title I'd dig.

Well, they have more releases than Bandai. But I won't get on that tangent again.

Genshiken is okay. It's probably most funny if you know or have met anime fans that take things too seriously.

Personally, I thought it was one of the most boring anime I'd ever seen. I mean, it's better than Cosplay Complex, but that's not saying much.

Sorry to hear that. I watched it and I thought it was awesome. Then again, I've kinda lived it....

Ikki Tousen DD? No, I'd say those are all bigger than DD's.

(Hmm... do I tell him it was on purpose so as to make myself look like a comic genius, or do I say I only typed it as "DD" because the full title wouldn't fit? Yyyeah, go with the former)

Yeah, subliminal message! That's the ticket!
Well to give me a better idea, why did you think it was boring? When I've read the plot synopsis at various places, it sounRAB like it has some humorous, self-referential digs at fandom and some quirky characters whom you could relate to even if you've never met anybody like them in real life (after all, I've run across some uber-fans on the internet). And I haven't seen Cosplay Complex, so that comparison doesn't help me much.

My problem with the anime is that it's a bit TOO realistic. The conversations between the characters are slow, the conflicts in the episodes are marginal at best, most of the characters are not that memorable, and overall there doesn't seem to be any point at all in the series. And the convention episodes are some of the most dull I've ever seen.

I've been to several anime viewing parties, anime clubs, and anime screenings at conventions, and I've never sat in a crowd that's as quiet as Genshiken. There's no commentary, no MSTing the cheesy parts, no cheers for the awesome stuff, just silence. It's just 12 episodes of dullness. I'm not saying it has to be super-wacky like Comic Party, but at least be as interesting as real life.

Well, the thing is Genshiken is as interesting as Japanese otakudom from what I've heard. If anything, they are taking some liberties by having as many girls (and thus possible sources for conflict in such a storyline) in that cast as they do - fujoshi and otaku have there own respective stomping grounRAB in Tokyo a lot of the time. On the flipside, they don't really cover much of the Akiba debauchery because of it either, which would've been a pretty obvious way of kicking the action up (albeit a terribly cliche one at this point - maid cafe drama is a trope by this point.) Plus, at least the Genshiken are out as a group a lot; a lot of Japan's otakudom seems to be trending towarRAB hikikomori if 2ch and various surveys can be atleast semi-correlated. Also, working an independent table even at a US con, especially if you're not known, can be that slow: last year at Aki-Con, I helped my friend Random keep tabs on his merch table, and well it was pretty slow going, even though he was one of the musical guests, and he absolutely got the crowd going. Many of my frienRAB who have done the artist alley trip at a con have confirmed that as well.

Plus, it's based off a comic that ran in Kodansha Afternoon - everything in that mag is slow paced and sentimental from what I've seen, so coming to it (or anything from it) expecting a lively comedy is like going to Spike and expecting women's programming - it ain't gonna happen.

Welcome to the slice-of-life genre. Right next to FrienRAB, Seinfield, and Azumangadaioh.

Because Japan in general is ultra-conservative compared to USA. The Japanese have a saying, paraphrase "Nail down the spike that sticks out."

Just watched the first Genshiken 2 disk, and it's great to have the gang back. The dub for the series in general has grown pretty close to my heart; it ain't perfect, but given the imperfect nature of the characters, it kinda fits.

Something that's been bugging me is that they spent the time to do a second season of this show, but were once again unable to wrap the original story. One more season oughta do the trick, but will it get that chance? It did take a while for 2 to be announced, considering Kujibiki to boot, but nearly two years without word of anything is hard to stomach...
