This is the talkback thread for Jeff Smith's "Bone" Picked Up for Big Screen.

Anymore, when I hear news like this I shudder at the thought of how the filmmakers could and probably will screw it up.

Well, no use tearing myself up inside with dread.

EDIT: Merged tb4000's post with thread in Comic Book forum and mirrored result into both forums.

As long as it's traditionally animated. I'm not saying that to be nerdy or anything; I honestly believe that the Bone universe wouldn't work in CGI. It needs Jeff Smith's lush linework, or else it just wouldn't be Bone.

I love the Bone comics. I really do. However, knowing Hollywood, they don't really care about faithfulness to source material as long as it brings them the box office earnings. Seriously, if this movie actually sticks faithfully to the source material without stooping to Dreamworks level humour, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I also want to hear Fone Bone's take on this.

Nope. "Executive Producer" is one of those titles that can really mean anything, from "They said we could put his name on it to sell the movie" to "He touched every aspect of the production everywhere and paid for it all."

Exactly! Remember Steven Spielberg as executive producer of Jurassic Park III? Look at how that film turned out!

The point is if you're going to adapt someone's work into a movie, make sure you can make it exciting to audiences while respecting the faithfulness of the creator. I hope Smith's contract with WB allows him to have more say into the making of the movie.

Which may be frustrating for Smith considering that Hollywood producers have a strict "celebrities only" policy when it comes to voice acting. I wish Smith the best of luck in that regard.

I think this could really work if they did it with traditional animation and were faithful to the story. Granted, I will always be wary of Bone in color (to this day, I refuse to buy any of the comics in color because the black-and-white is already bloody beautiful), but this could work very well if put in the right hands. We'll just wait and see.

On a related note, here's a cast list I thought up when I first read Bone. For me, the casting is so perfect that I already hear them when I read the comic.

Fone Bone-Billy West, using his 'Fry' voice
Phoney Bone-Steve Buscemi
Smiley Bone-Tom Kenny, in his 'normal' voice
Thorn-Mae Whitman
Rose-June Foray
Lucius-Jim Cummings
The Great Red Dragon-Thurl Ravenscroft (I'm aware he's dead, thank you)
The Two Stupid Rat Creatures-Frank Welker
Kingdok-Welker
The Hooded One-Ron Perlman
Rock Jaw-Tony Jay (I am also aware that he is dead)

Anyone else got voices in mind?

I realy hope this gets made I don't care about a ll the little worries because most likely it will be CGI just as long as they keep true to the feel of the story and charters

Here are mine:

Fone Bone: Neil Patrick Harris or Jim Henshaw
Phoney Bone: Gilbert Gottfried
Smiley Bone: Bill Farmer
Thorn: Tia Carrerre (sp?)
Rose: June Foray
Lucius: Brad Garrett

That's all that I've got so far.

It was only a matter of time, and the time is now. Keep in mind this though: Rowling got TOTAL control over the Harry Potter movies through Warner Bros.; she demanded an all-British cast and a straight adaption (at least at first), and she got those things.

Let's hope Smith got a similar deal. I suspect he did, because it's not like he hasn't been pressured to movie-fy Bone before. Probably more times than we'll ever know. If he finally accepted an offer, it must be good.

Or at least better than what Nickelodeon wanted. Ick.

Thurl Ravenscroft WOULD have been good as the Dragon....what a pity. Jon Lovitz would make a good Smiley IMO.

Stuff 2D and CGI. I want Cat in the Hat-style dudes in suits.

Joking aside, my personal pick would be 2D, but I wouldn't mind live action with CGI bones at all.
