Ah, I see what they did there.

This is a fascinating review, by the way. Personally, the "sadistically designed" killing and formulaic nature of the early episodes turned me off in a hurry, to say nothing of the questionable premise and bad theology referenced in the review as well. Looking at it in terms as a strong & straightforward negative commentary on revenge, however, is an interesting perspective to say the least.

I can't help wondering if the series would be better if it had introduced Hajime the reporter much earlier. That description of his episodes makes the show sound considerably more interesting.

There were some episodes of this series which were just PAINFUL to watch. In one, for instance, this mean old lady treats a junior high school girl like crap and holRAB her two dogs hostage out of paranoia.

By the end of the episode both dogs are killed, along with a litter of puppies one of them gives birth to.

I know there's a cost-of-revenge message, but sometimes the bastarRAB of the week are just ASKING for it.

Yeah we, uh, have a bit of a backlog in our reviews .

This is one of those reviews where I can intellectually appreciate everything that Maxie says, and even agree with the overwhelming majority of it, but still not come to the same conclusion. I can see a lot of what's being described, but in the end, I'm not sure if any of it is there by design or is just meaning being placed there by the viewer in an effort to justify the series as a whole. I suppose it doesn't really matter even if it isn't what the creators intended if it's the meaning you can draw out of it, though.

I do agree that the introduction of Hajime does shake up the series a bit, though (IMO) not fast enough. Still, the way his story and Hell Girl's tie together in the end does make for some truly excellent episodes at the end.
