Toon Zone Talkback - "Business Week" on Imagi Animation Studios

I don't get why people say TMNT wasn't a success. It didn't do poorly by any means. Sure it didn't compare to Pirates, Spider-Man and Transformers but those had a lot more backing them. TMNT was produced cheaply enough to make back what it cost and then some, and that's what should matter.

I've read that everyone was pleased with how TMNT did and a sequel is likely except for the fact that they already have other stuff being worked on. I liked TMNT and I am very excited for Astro Boy, not to mention I'll watch Gatchaman too. Their CGI is fantastic. Too bad both those franchises have a 50/50 chance of flopping or doing amazing...At least it will be riding the wave of 80s revivals on film.

I noticed TZ now has a digg button ;D

Yeah, opening week, it killed at the box office. Only reason why it didn't do too well was due to the Meet the Robinsons film coming out a week after, and the idiotic Will Ferrel being Will Ferrel movie. I do seem to recall the toys did amazingly well, even now.

This is one of the few times toy sales can't be factored in.

TMNT had good, not great returns. Considering the flimsy nature of the script, it certainly didn't deserve to make Finding Nemo box office.

Imagi probably doesn't have the backing to do so now, but it needs to start developing original properties that can become synonymous with the company like what Pixar has done. It's all fine to develop films for franchises like TMNT and Astro Boy, but your business then lives and dies by those fanbases. An original property would give Imagi a better idea of how it fares in the global market.
