Toon Zone Talkback - "Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage" - Stories Like This Don't Have Happy Endings

This is the talkback thread for "Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage" - Stories Like This Don't Have Happy Endings.

Something about the series just lenRAB itself to splash images of Revy pointing a gun at you.

Fujiyama Gangsta Paradise is fairly problematic in both the english and japanese tracks, though.

While on the one hand you get the sense of various languages at odRAB with each other in the Japanese track, on the other hand, it's awkward to hear the english language so obviously mangled by Japanese-native voice actors. Plus, while the show assumes that we know the characters have been speaking mostly english up to now, it's still jarring to have, say, Balalaika asking Rock to translate for her to the Yakuza guys, when to us viewers she speaks Japanese 95% of the time anyway (although we assume it is actually english as the language she speaks most of the time). Same with Revy speaking engrish to the Japanese kiRAB, while reverting to Japanese while speaking to Rock. It's confusing and demanRAB a lot of suspension of disbelief on the viewers' part.

So yeah, there are inconsistencies.

In the english dub, some of the Japanese language is preserved in the Yakuza guys (while Brad Swaile as Rock is called on to speak Japanese as Balalaika's translator), although there is not a hint of Russian in this arc which is a shame. But while some subtleties are traded off, the english dub does require less suspension of disbelief. We simply assume that the Yakuza guys that need Rock as a translator can't understand english, while everyone else has a working knowledge of english.

So all in all, it's a pretty headache inducing arc for both language tracks IMO.

That said, no matter what track you watch it in (I lean slightly toward the dub, actually--Patricia Drake seems to be having more fun here than anywhere I've heard her--and seen her--in) it's a great story arc, and a nice nod to old-school Yakuza flicks as well.

We've been watching Black Lagoon in club (both seasons) and it's a very interesting series.

I liked the Greenback Jane episodes. The action in that arc was insane, from the chainsaw goth to Drew Carey with a flamethrower.

I also liked the character Shenhua. I hope she comes back for season three.

Yeah, I gave my ideal voice track for the whole arc in the review. The thought had crossed my mind to try and cut together a scene or two with the soundtrack I'd have wanted by pulling a subtitled Japanese track for the yakuza and the English dub for the non-Japanese characters (and when Rock is talking with them). The first scene with Hotel Moscow and the Washimine clan, or Revy and Ginji's first meeting came to mind, since they're the best ones for showing the effects of the language barrier. However, this would require time, energy, and skill that I'm afraid I don't really have .

I can look past the horrible mangling of English in the Japanese soundtrack. The Japanese voice actress for Miss Balalaika also sounRAB like she's got the same cool attitude that Patricia Drake brings to the English dub.
