This is the talkback thread for BBC News: "Can Technology Replace Human Actors?" (Answer: No).

I'd have thought that this article's conclusions were self-evident, except that I've seen lots of proponents of mocap CGI thinking it can do everything and lots of opponents thinking/fearing that it will replace the other media that they love. So, although I got a little satirical with the article title, I think it's also a rather sensible look at the state of the technology.

Currently? No, but I have no doubt that within a few decades, CGI will be improved to the point where it can mimic real human characteristics perfectly, and that's when human actors will start being phased out over the next few decades after that. By this time next century, we'll be seeing an 'Expendables' type western with Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Javier Bardhem (?), Tommy Lee Jones, and others that'll look completely realistic.

The day real flesh-and-blood actors are entirely replaced by CGI dopplegangers (if it happens in my lifetime) is the day I officially stop watching new movies.

There's truth to the whole "uncanny valley" thing. We can accept a CGI creature or cartoony humans, but something very, very close to being a normal human - but is still %0.01 not human - will give a lot of people the creeps.

Besides, it's hella expensive. I'm hoping budgets will go down in the future and a greater emphasis will be on scriptwriting, directing, and acting, even in big Hollywood fare (a guy can dream).
