This is the talkback thread for Bandai Entertainment Licenses "Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens".

Seems like a big score. I'll have to watch it to see if it's any good.

Not too surprising, considering that they got Haruhi and Lucky Star.

They could've knocked this out in one set since it's 13 episodes (14 including the bonus), but if the two volumes are reasonably priced then it's fine. It should be 6-7 episodes per disc, which is reasonable.

No idea how good it is...guess I'll soon find out. I could do without the "Crazy Shrine Maidens" bit in the title though.

One thing that has me scratching my head is this part of the press release.

Er: why limit the availability of the DVD like that? That's a first for them, AFAIK.

Another subbed only release. I'm not liking this trend.

If they can't afford a US dub, why not outsource the dubbing to Singapore or Hong Kong? It'd be better than no dub at all.

I've never actually seen the show either, so far, but this is certainly good news for its fans.

I guess it could be a sign that they're not going to make too many of them in the first place either?

Limited availability goes hand in hand with limited production and distribution.

As far as I'm aware, it's basically another one of those 'moe internet fanboy bait' titles. I really hope Bandai aren't going to follow the same bad marketting trend as ADV.

As for no dub- I think this is where we're seeing BV's continued influence. After all, their business model was sub only DVRAB authoured in Japan. It seems unless they get a TV deal and thus need a dub, we won't be seeing a dub in the future. If they do any con panels in the next few months, hopefully people will raise this issue.

That's true, the main difference would be that BV tried to ask for a ridiculous price, all the same, while BE is usually more realistic in terms of pricing and it's therefore more likely that people will actually buy something like this, if they're interested in the product.

It may depend, though. Freedom has no TV deal but it has a dub (edit: although, it seems the Blu-Ray release from earlier did get a dub track, so this is likely a moot point). I think there may be some Bandai Visual influence at work, but I wouldn't count out the economy and current market as the dominant factor. BEI did cut some staff a ways back, and extras are limited compared to before. There's also the fact that the last time they dubbed a show like this it was Lucky Star, and that didn't go well. They may be doing okay, but they likely can't afford multiple situations like that at this point.

Well, as I noted at ANN, if you're going to do a sub-only release this is a good way to do it. Streaming is already up, the release is timed with the announcement (right on time to be sold at Otakon--well played), and there isn't long to wait for the whole thing to be available.

The only way you can drag me out in front of a "moe internet fanboy bait" title is as if the title is dubbed. The dub actresses typically don't shriek as much as the Japanese actresses, which makes watching the dub more tolerable than the sub.

Thus, if Kannagi is that sort of show, and it's subtitled only, I'm not watching it.

Lucky Star was liked by many in Japan. It's more of an acquired taste over here. Nonetheless, I don't think slice-of-life/comedy series are hurting the anime industry since they've been around for like...ever.

BTW, I saw episode 1 on ANN. It wasn't too bad. Just your run-of-the-mill romantic comedy series. Nothing amazing but nothing that made me want to waggle my finger at Japan.

I've always considered Lucky Star to be more of a moe show. Just due to the way the characters look and act.

Speaking as someone who loves Chibi Maruko-chan, I don't think slice-of-life shows are hurting anything.

Umm, no. "Lucky Star" has actually been a decent performer all in all, just not knockout nurabers for the resources Bandai put in to it. It's certainly not the industry's big problem, even if I don't like it much. For what Bandai's spending on it, Kanagi should do well. They know the audience.
