No Tolkien review would be complete without a little controversy, so: "Do Balrogs have wings?" :p

If anyone is bored, you could go through my old TZ posts and see that I go back and forth on my thoughts on this film. I have mixed feelings on it. I give Bakshi credit for having to basically create the whole look of the world and characters from scratch, the tone is right, and its goals are high, but it drags in some parts, I don't care for the rotoscoping,* and its ending is definitely abrupt and inconclusive.

* In one interview, Bakshi would basically say, "How would you do these epic battles with hundreds of soldiers without raising production costs?" Well, Mr. Bakshi, I don't know. But I still don't have to like it.

In light of the animated LOTR movie, I'm now finally catching the meaning of the punchline in that Simpsons college episode when Comic Book Guy says to some students, "...And that is why The Lord of the Rings cannot be filmed..."

He must have seen Bakshi's movie.;)
