I still haven't seen the original Appleseed...

The OVA was on Sci-Fi a few weeks ago, and the movie was airing on Starz a while back. It was pretty good stuff for a big action movie. Ebert gave it **1/2. The OVA wasn't nearly as good.

I'd actually say to skip the original movie and just jump into this one if you're curious. The first movie starts off interesting, and then just stops making sense pretty quickly.

Plus, the original was a Geneon title, so there may be non-trivial issues in getting it, unless WHV manages to score the rights for the original and re-releases it. Still, I grabbed my copy of the first movie not too long ago at a Borders, so it's plausible that other retailers will have a copy lying around.

The original anime or the original motion capture anime? I enjoyed them both but have opinions as why the first had so much foul language. the motion capture had a firmer story but the character/background had a little too much contrast for me but the action was great. I'm looking forward to seeing this new one. I'll most likely have to rent it.
Both stories had slightly different themes, but were both easily followed for me. The main points to carry from the previous shows is the how the main characters are related and the Bioroids connection to a utopic society.

Geneon. What a pain. Once the stock in the US is depleted, all their shows become unattainable. I doubt that old mayrtial will be picked up by other producers.

Well, this was absolutely stunning on Blu-Ray. Overall I liked it. Sure it had it's problems, but you can definitely tell that they really learned a lot from the first film and put it to good use here. This movie is also more expressive emotional than the first one as well (imo). Also, for once, the Woo doves actually had a part in the plot! ;)
I listened to some of the other tracks and I gotta say, the German and French language dubs sounded pretty good, better then the English track. That doesn't mean the English track is bad though, because it's good as well. My parents are going to love this movie (they're Sci-Fi junkies).
It's going to be interesting to see Ed use this movie as a comparison tool when he reviews Vexille later this year.

Ah, this is probably one of the better HD movies out there to show off you system to friends and family, until the Incredibles arrive on Blu-ray that is. :D

I recently dug this up after seeing a link in the blog Ed.

As a longtime fan of Shirow's Appleseed and since I very much agree with you in regards to Zemeckis latest efforts, I very much liked and appreciated this review.

A couple things though. In your article you mentioned that Bioroids are robotic. Which isn't really accurate. Bioroids are in fact organic human beings. They are artificial clones of sorts, but what's pre-programmed is their DNA. Tereus is a full human, simply cloned using Briareos' DNA.

Also, the idea of Bioroids not having emotions is something that was embellished by the movies. Bioroids are in fact very emotional, they are simply more low key than humans to keep them in line more. Tereus himself starts becoming attracted to Deunan despite himself. In the manga though there's nothing that really says that Bioroids have no emotions or sex drive.

In the manga, the characters of Yoshi and Hitomi are actually a couple made pretty blatantly obvious. Yoshi is also a tech obsessed nerd which was also downplayed in the movies. In the manga Yoshi's love for tech is a borderline fetish. One time Briareos visited his and Hitomi's home in a big honking motorcycle and Yoshi practically had a little bit of what the French call la petit morte on the spot.

Before I start blabbering more, I have to admit that I bought the first volume of the manga after watching the first movie, and it reminded me why I don't like Masamune Shirow's work all that much. So, any knowledge I have is only what was in the movies.

"I prefer the term 'Artificial Person' myself."
:)

It's been a while since I saw these movies, so I can't remember how clearly they made that point. I remember the powerful visual of the bioroid factory in the first movie, though, so I think I might have just assumed erroneously that they worked kind of like the Terminator (or at least the T-800 line) with human bodies grown from DNA over robotic skeletons.

Yeah, I remember the opening narration of this movie stating that emotions thing up front, probably because they had a lot less time to establish those kinds of subtleties. I remember a few points when it seemed like that programming was slipping throughout the movies, but that seemed in keeping with the movie's general themes about human vs. machine and all that fun stuff.

I have to remember to watch this movie again in about 2-3 years and see how well it's managed to age.

Sorry to hear that you aren't digging on Shirow.

But I watch the movies every now and again. They are very cliched but nicely executed with great animation and I agree that they use the technology more effectively for the benefit of the story than Polar Express or Beowulf.

I just wish it was more like what occurred in the manga since that's the bread and butter to me.
