Too many adverts!

It seems these days that you cannot watch an advert supported channel for more than 10mins before adverts kick in, lasting for what seems like ever  The worst offenders are ITV, C4 and Film 4 not to mention sky channels (1, 2 and 3)

A good example of this was last-nights X factor, at 8:42 they went to adverts at 8:47 program resumed then at 8:56 (less than 10 mins later) more adverts

I personally would like to see adverts only before and after programs (obviously not at all but channels need to make money!) or maybe once per hour?

Anyone else agree?

I totally agree with you.

I get particularly irritated when all we seem to get bombarded with every few minutes are adverts for furniture and that annoying Go Compare advert. I don't know about anyone else but I am sick to death of having these rammed down my throat constantly.

We Sky+ everything on the channels you mention and speed past the ad breaks.

It's simply a case of more (ad breaks) = less (ad views), because the ads are now so frequent, we actively screen them out.

If they were simple 3 mins, like the old days, then the channels would be watchable again - as broadcast!

Many preview PVR's have "skip" buttons, press one for 30 secs, or another one for 2 minutes, takes 5 seconds to skip a whole break!

I've always found Film 4 ok for adverts, only happening every 25-30 mins. Some channels may have their first break after about 10 mins but then go for a break every 20 mins.

Anyway aren't ad breaks all silent and move at very fast speeds these days?

It wouldn't be so bad if they showed new ones but they the show the same ones over and over and over again. It's enough to drive you up the wall.

And... those channels that show the insurance ads. Or the Phone ads. Or the bloody BUY ONE GET ONE FREE - I SAID YOU BUY ONE GET ONE FREE !:mad::mad: And don't even get me started on the Accident ads... :o

Back in the day, an hour long programme would have a break every 20 minutes, now it is 15.

They are getting more and more as they make them longer, more frequent by a few minutes and LOUDER!!

I find radio worse these days, I hardly listen to it now as it is adverts every other song.

It's not just the ads, it's everything around them - the constant reminders of what bloody channel you're watching, the little pop-ups during the programme of what's coming up next, the repetition, the repetition...

You should try watching CBS...I've never seen so many advert breaks in an hour slot!!!

I usually record everything so I can skip through the adverts

During the ads we mute the sound and check if there's anything of interest on the rolling news channels and red button/301. We haven't got a PVR because there hasn't been a programme that we've wanted to record for several years.

I despair of marketing people. They are so immersed in their own make-believe lies that they don't realise how much frequently repeated ads alienate potential customers. If they must keep advertising the same product during every ad break, why not make a dozen different ads and select them at random?

I hardly ever watch anything directly on commercial channels because of this. I record it on a HDD recorder and play it back later (sometimes only 20 minutes later) so I can FF over all the ads.

This brings a typical US drama on C5 down from 60 minutes to about 42

In the very old days ITV had one ad break half way through a 1 hour programme then it went to 2 and now it's almost universally 3 breaks of about 5-6 minutes each (lots of which is just ads for other programmes on the same channel)

Back in the day if the programmes where half an hour in length there would be 4 breaks an hour. A one hour programme would have two breaks, making three breaks in the hour (although I bet they were longer). Look at the older programmes shown on ITV4. A one hour programme no longer fits a 60 minute slot, unless they edit it.

Some channels are worse than others and peak time is worst of all and if you factor in DOGs, squinched credits and other onscreen malarky - it's almost if they didn't want us to watch the programmes they show. Going by the current ratings of programmes in general this is one thing programme planners are succeeding at!

Yes,I also agree. If I dont Sky+ a programme, then I mute through the ads. They only have themselves to blame for our actions.
Are you able to watch Gold?
They go into a break about 6 mins into the programme.
Regards

It's becoming totally unbearable. And I understand why ITV horde their ads and bombard their most popular shows with breaks, but it makes watching stuff like the X-Factor really distruptive.

My mum's been complaining that the ad breaks in Downtown Abbey have been ruining a great show she's otherwise really enjoying.

The worst thing by far though is the way they crank up the sound so you can't even escape by making a cup of tea. It's a form of assalt, imho! If people want to avoid the ads, they will - I don't think having the ads so loud is going to make much difference so why do they keep getting worse for it?

I wish there were tougher regulations. I think it's really out of control now and only appears to be getting worse.

It's the loudess of the adverts when they come on that really gets to me!, i feel like i am constantly turning the volume up and down!,:mad:

TV is bombarded with adverts. It's always the same ones too - go compare, Churchill, accident claims etc  I have not watched a full advert for a long time now
