Too late for my professor and I to have a professional relationship?

I've had 3 classes with this professor so far. After the second I wrote a love poem on his teaching evaluation. After the 3rd class I took with him, in which I wrote a story about student/teacher love affairs, he offered to help me get the story published. And so we have been in contact these past few months outside of class.

But the other day, when I went to go tell him the good news that the story was being published, the first thing he says to me is,

"I got your 'sentimental' message."

This is what I had written on my 3rd course eval. sheet:

"What I'm about to write here is going to sound sentimental, but I'm going to write it anyway. During a tumultuous year, when I was often depressed and which had for its lowest point two weeks during which I found myself homeless after a domestic dispute, your courses were rays of sunshine in my life. Thank you so much for all your time."

I felt so guilty for having been so emo, and I apologized immediately to him after he brought it up but then he said it was rather up to him to be sorry b/c he had no idea I had gone through such things, and that it made him sad. Then he checked to make sure I was ok now.

He was still very happy to hear the news about the story...

My questions are:

1. What on earth do you think might be going through his mind right now?
2. Is it too late for us to have a professional relationship? I respect him too much now to have him risk his career and I feel he might feel the same way regarding me.
