Too emotional...

I have a question that is bothering me to some extent and hope someone has a few good suggestions.
I am starting nursing school this fall and my fiance asked me how do I know I will be able to function as a nurse when I get so emotional over the simplest things. I have always been an emotional person, but lately I find myself crying or getting choked up or teary eyed over hallmark commercials or a a simple movie. What can I do? Being a nurse is very important to me, so I need to figure this out. Please help! :dizzy:

I am not a nurse but I worked in a high school health office. I used to get sick at the site of blood. The first week on the job, a student was accidently hit in the mouth, knocking out 6 teeth. It was a bloody mess. I was nauseous. However, another student started collecting the teeth for me. She was so calm about it. I suddenly just kicked into gear and did everything I had to do. It was a form of detachment. After that, I was able to handle anything and I saw a lot. Split heads, overdoses, empailing a hand on a fence etc...Sure I sometimes fell apart when I got home but it was just doing what had to be done. Oh and the kid was able to have 3 of his teeth replanted as we stuck them in milk right away to preserve them. You will do it. Something just kicks in. My husband was in law enforcement for 36 years. Did he ever get emotional? You bet, but not on the scene.
As a patient, I am glad you have emotions. I like caring nurses when I am scared or in pain. It is comforting. Just keep them in check, but don't lose them and you will be just the kind of nurse I hope I get when in the hospital.
