Tonsil removal...?

Can someone maybe tell me how often people have to get their tonsils removed in their life time? Like is there 'blank' out of 'blank' people who get their tonsils removed?
I've been worrying for awhile now about if I might ever have to get my tonsils removed, and if I should just get them removed as soon as possible even if they aren't infected...Because I've heard stories about how the later you get your tonsils removed the more likely you are to have the scabs in your throat fall off and bleed...a lot...like to death...but only because you didn't know you were bleeding...because you were asleep...
Yikes...
So...ever since I heard my family talk about how that happened to someone I've kinda been wondering if I should get my tonsils removed. What does getting your tonsils removed feel like anyways? I've heard it feels like you swallowed broken glass...

There was a time that most all children had their tonsils removed. But that time has passed so now they are only removed if their purpose is of no value any more and they are causing you illness. The tonsils are a filtering system and important to have but you can live just fine without them. Having them removed is not a pleasant experience and yes it does feel like a really bad case of strep throat but in this day and age of pain meds and laser surgery there isn't much to be concerned about. Doctors are just not going to remove your tonsils for no good reason...and it isn't common for adults to have them removed.
