So I was diagnosed with GERD. It all started when I was taking this stupid diet pill, and all of a sudden after 3 weeks my esophagus was burning, my tongue was cranked, swolled and red. My tonsils were red and swollen too. Also, I felt something was stuck in my esophagus.

So had endoscopy and doc said I had GERD. Now I am taking twice a day Nexium. Doc will see me in a month to see how am I doing, and maybe drop to 1 pill a day.

The thing is that I always feel this thing under my tongue. It is sensitive, and the layer connecting the tongue with the floor of my mouth, is always white. When I stretch my tongue, it bothers me. Also, the thing under my tongue (is it saliva duct?) it seems enlarged. Sometimes I play with it with my tongue itself and I can seem to touch it (noo! I am not weird, this is serious!)

What is going on?

You've got an infection of some sort, probably from the acid getting into your stomach and killing off the friendly organisms that live in there. I know exactly what you are talking about with the absence of the white coating. If you can brave the horrid taste, rinse your mouth out a few times a day with hydrogen peroxide, or if you're a baby like me, dab a q-tip into some peroxide and clean the sore spots really well. It happens to me sometimes when I get sick, which happens more than I care to admit since we've got a house of toddlers. There are little ducts there to the salivary gland and while I was pregnant the last time, got that thing going again and the infection spread into my salivary gland so ended up with a hot hard swollen painful lump under my jaw. Antibiotics had that cleared up in two days. I was once prescribed something called "Magic Mouthwash" that worked quite well but insurance wouldn't cover it so I just do the peroxide now. Magic mouthwash cleared it up within hours and peroxide is a slow heal over a few days. Hopefully you get it straightened out soon!

I wonder if it might not be yeast. Something to try would be probiotics (Align) or a good quality yogurt to see if it improves your symptoms.

Over the years, I have found that gargling with warm salt water (do not swallow) has also proven to be a good old fashioned remedy for all sorts of things that ail the mouth and throat. This is a habit that comes from my mother and grandmother from before the days when we did not have all these fancy medicines.
