TomTom Mobile 5 GPS receiver package for Nokia 6620

Has anyone tried this ? The receiver looks very stylish ! And the package price is reasonable too. Better than smart2go.com http://www.smart2go.com/us/home/index_html
And I think TomTom is more well-known in GPS software market.

Found something could be useful. Unfortunately, it does not have Canadian map size ......

It needs 1.8 gb just for the whole US maps !!! I guess we should only download what we need to the MMC.

The TomTom Navigator 5 product works with the PalmOS and PocketPC platforms. I don't know if this would work on a windows smartphone. It will work on a Treo 650. Best of all, they sell it with US maps now. The TomTom website should list the system requirements for Nav 5.

It may be that this package is for Palm/CE - it doesn't say. But it does say it's a software-only thing... no receiver...

I think I'm gonna buy the GlobalSat BT-338..

That's pretty cool to see the different sizes that states take up. I was sort off surprised that some were larger than others.

i'm starting to worry, i'm reading on the gps passion forum that TomTom mobile 5 doesn't work with any gps receiver, only the one it comes with, is that true? the guys on the other forum posted a work around but some didn't get it working, anybody got any experience with that?

http://www.tomtom.com/products/compatibility.php?ID=69&Language=1

From tomtom.com web site, it says it is compatible to Nokia 6600 (so I assume it is compatible to 6620 as well)

it's on this page http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15015&whichpage=3

look for the poster named "umf"(maybe half the page down) from then on most of the posts have to do with using your own gps reciever

update..... i got tomtom mobile 5 up and running on my 6620 with the canada and usa maps and everything works perfectly, i live in toronto and all the points of interest are there and correct, the canada map is only 85 mbs, i never really searched out of the ontario province to see the detail in other areas but ontario and especially toronto is very detailed, i'll never get lost downtown again. my only problem is my girlfriends address... it's telling me it her house number doesn't exist... her house number is 3 but it's telling me that on that street only 4 to 96 exists, very weird, so i would have to navigate to 4 (streetname) instead of 3(streetname), no big deal...... what i also like is the fact that i don't need a gps reciever to get text based or imaged based directions, if you go to advanced planning you can set a desired route then choose text based instructions or a driving demo complete with distance time remaining and voice instructions..... i can't wait to get my reciever and actually try it out...when that happens i'll be back with another update

Good to hear you've got it working! I sent you a PM...

For maps and stuff, you can report inconsistencies to NavTeq, or TeleAtlas. I'm not sure which TomTom uses, but you can gop to their web sites, and send them both something to report a problem with that street.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you - Nokia 6620 and was looking for a good GPS package. I've got a 2GB MMC card, and the TomTom receiver.
I've got the TomTom Mobile 5 UK package, and have ordered the Navigator 5 Software-only package (knowing full well that it's only supposed to work on Palm/PPC).

The TomTom GPS unit is pretty good, but although it's supposed to be a SiRF Star III unit, I'm not getting as good reception (6-7 Sats locked) as some people have reported while using the GlobalSat (9 sats ) or Holux GPS (8 sats locked) receivers... I have tried using it in the burbs, as well as downtown T.O. - not much diff...

I'm sniping ebay for the last few days trying to snatch one of either a GlobalSat BT338 or the Holux Slim GR236... I'll try to grab both and do a head-to-head comparison and post it here and gpspassion.com

Let me know how your setup turns out... I haven't gotten the Canada maps yet, so I have no idea how well it's going to work with the UK Mobile 5 package... at the worst, I'll just have to pick up a Palm Zire 72 or second hand T3 (or some BT-enabled PPC unit) nd use it as a dedicated PIM/GPS unit...

Pretty much - the maps are faily out of date too - roads that have been in my area for the last 3 years are not on the Canada maps from Navigator 5.

Plus one really weird one -anyone else living in Toronto and using Navigator 5 please confirm this one for me - I was travelling west on King St. just past Bay St. - to continu west, it had King St. ending at York St. - and I had to route around... STRANGE!!

Ahhh, actually I had heard of that - the 'rename the BT receiver to TOMTOM GPS RECEIVER' fix - I don't have mine yet, so I'm not sure if Nokia Symbian has the same problem as that guy reported - he didn't say what phone he was using?

Has anyone else here tried using TomTom on Nokia with the non-TomTom BT GPS receiver?

I guess one way to test would be to try connecting something to my 6620 and renaming it in the profile to something really long like TOMTOM GPS RECEIVER and see if it accepts that.... now I gotta wait till I get home to connect to my other BT stuff...

I'll post again when I get a chance to try it...

/O
