Tom the trendsetter - Boston Herald

As the week drew to a close and the number of Facebook “likes” for his Chick-fil-A stance threatened to fry the Internet, Mayor Tom Menino finally acknowledged that he doesn’t have the legal authority to keep a chicken shop from opening in Boston just because he disagrees with the CEO’s views on gay marriage.
“I can’t do that. That would be interference to his rights to go there,” the mayor said Thursday.
But just when he was starting a national trend!
Because after Menino scored national headlines with his threat to deny government permits to Chick-fil-A, Chicago got in on the action. Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared Chick-fil-A’s values aren’t Chicago values (well, the city is more of a deep dish pizza place anyway).
But like Menino, Chicago Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno apparently thought threatening government retaliation would send a stronger message. Moreno said he planned to use the chain’s request for a zoning change to block its plans for a second store in the city, because of CEO Dan Cathy’s activism and recent comments in opposition to same-sex marriage.
“Because of [Cathy’s] ignorance, I will now be denying Chick-fil-A’s permit to open a restaurant in the 1st Ward,” Moreno said.

And imagine — some people think our politicians’ priorities are misplaced
