Today is Record Store Day

So go out and support your local shops, if you're lucky enough to still have some. Living in Seattle, I feel pretty lucky to have so many cool shops around. There are 5 good ones within 10 miles of me. When I first moved here almost 3 years ago, there were probably about 8. So things have definitely changed, and I try to support them as much as I can. Though my disposable income isn't what it used to be, and often I can find better deals online. But I do try to go every few weeks to see what I can find, and avoid online shipping charges (I feel the $3 average for s+h is pretty high...though I do pay taxes instead when buying locally).

One of my favorite stores is offering 20% off everything today, except sale items. Maybe I can break away and find some good stuff, even though I was just there last weekend. So check your local stores' websites and see if they have any deals going on, or special events of some kind. Happy shopping! :hphones:

I would support mine more if it wasn't run by an ageing hippy who stocks far too many James Taylor & Alan Parsons Project albums than should be considered healthy.
 
My record store had 8 hours of live music and 3$ LP's. It was awesome.
EVERY BAND kicked some major ass. I didn't have a bunch of money, so I only got Explosions in the Sky's Those who tell the truth... and Stardeath & White Dwarfs' I Can't get away/ The Birth 7".

Also, I met the Flaming Lips without even realizing it.
They were surrounded by fangirls and they were asking them questions.
When I walked by I heard one of them say, "lyk, omg, so what is your favorite Super Furry Animals album, I like Radiator the most hahahaha".
Now, I didn't know they were talking to Wayne Conye, but I butted in and said, "I think Radiator is their most overrated piece of work, I like Love Craft the most". Wayne agreed and said that was one his favorites. The Fangirls got pissed at me.
I didn't find out that I just met The Flaming Lips until 5 minutes after that.
 
This is a great idea...there are quite a few participating shops in my area, and a few places I hadn't heard of too that need to be checked out. Too bad it's pouring buckets outside and flooding all over the city, or else I might venture out. :(
 
There are still a few great ones here in the Philadelphia area. One in Princeton University campus area too. I miss browsing through record stores. It's great to be able to download or find anything you want online but it lacks the communal experience of record-browsing. The feeling of not knowing what you're gonna find or that treasure hunt feeling of searching for "The One" album or piece of Holy Grail you've been looking for. That's why I like flea markets and yard sales. Always good for old out-of-print albums and cRAB. Cassettes too. I still have my tape player.
 
Absolutely. AKA on 2nd street is one of my favorite record/CD stores ever. And for old vinyl, Philadelphia Record Exchange is incredible. If you've never been, it's basically a house full to the brim with recorRAB on three floors. I could spend all day in that place.
 
Aw man, sucks when it's raining. Nice weekend here for us, had rain last weekend when I was CD shopping.

Jackhammer, I didn't realize you were in England. I'm guessing this is a US thing anyway.
 
Haha. Record Exchange still has some of my old albums from back in the day on the wall. Back when I was still struggling and had to sell some of my babies. "sniff!! sniff". I used to hang out there all day back in the late 80s. Don't get downtown much anymore and South St is pretty much a drag. Also that used book store about 50 yarRAB away on the same block at 5th and South had a great used section in the back. Don't even know if it's still there anymore. They had quite a few of mine showcased too.

Yeah, South Street gets kind of old. And did you notice they got rid of all the trees last year? Whose durab idea was that? There's no shade all anywhere there now. There are still some good music stores in that area though, like the Record Exchange and the Relapse store.

i feel kinda lucky, the closest record shop is a block away and another one is about five. i'm not going today, but i don't feel bad, i spent like $35 there on thursday.
