Tobacco tax hike....What's your opinion?

I want to know how others feel about the new implemented Tobacco Tax Hike to pay for low-income children's healthcare. Do you think it's fair that ANOTHER tax has been placed on smokers? Do you think it's right that smoker's are taking the blame for the country's health? How do you feel about Obama now after he said there wouldn't be any new taxes? If you are a smoker, are you going to quit now, and how?

My opinion: Why are they only taxing smokers? Why not drinkers, or the obese? If they are going to put new taxes in place they should not be targeting one specific group of people. Tax the fast food chains and restaurants causing obesity (leading to diabetes, heart disease etc), and also tax alcohol beverages too. I am pissed about this new tax and now wish that I hadn't voted for Obama. But I do know this much....I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow to get the prescription Chantix so that I can quit. The gov't can kiss my a$$ with their tax hike. And as soon as the housing market gets better, my family is considering moving to Canada.
 
I think maybe this tobacco law may have been in the works before Obama was elected into office.I quite smoking almost 9 years ago just because of all these targets on smokers.If you are going to quit smoking,you should quit cold turkey.That to me is the only way to quit.I quit smoking and drinking at the same time and I haven't looked back,and boy am I saving a lot of money.
 
I think this tax hike on tobacco is plain outright ludicrous. Don't get me wrong, everyone understands that smoking is bad for one's health. But this hits mostly the lower income people very very hard in the pocketbook.

Furthermore, the more people who quit smoking because of this tax, or health reasons, the less tax that is received. We as citizens will just end up paying other taxes on other things to pay for this Government program. THAT IS A MAJOR PROBLEM in the future years to come.
 
no tax is too high on tobacco and the money is going to a very worthy cause...your smoking raises EVERYONES health care costs
 
The tax money NEVER goes to the programs that they are said that they will go to...

It hasn't happened in any state I have looked at.

We need to either make the human use of Tobacco illegal or leave people the hell alone.

Look at the definition of what it takes to make a drug illegal...

1. No legitimate medical use
2. Highly Addictive
3. Highly damaging to the body

There are more but I"m in a hurry...

Tobacco fits EACH AND EVERY DEFINITION of what makes a substance illegal...

Marijuana is illegal yet Tobacco is a'ok? That doesn't make any sense.

Tobacco for human consumption should be made as illegal as the use of Marijuana for human consumption.

It is crazy that a DRUG like tobacco is legal when it is such a pointless and dangerous substance.
 
"Sin Tax" on luxury items and increasess on lowere income wage earners have always been on the list of easy targets for tax increase. The lobbies for the issues are not strong enough to generate much oppostion.

Sorry, I'm all for this tax. Cigarette smoke not only harms the user, but those around him or her as well. Go ahead and put on an alcohol tax too - and porn (sex toys too) while we're at it. These are vices - none of which are a necessity (and, no, I'm not some kind of prude. I do drink & have been known to purchase a "fun" item now and again). A tax will not make people stop purchasing altogether, and if some children can get some badly needed healthcare as a result - go for it!
