To take out the air conditioning unit in a 1996 Ford Taurus GL, 3.0L what

parts do you have to remove first? can car be run with out unit if i get a smaller belt?
 
What are you trying to do? A repair? Save a little fuel? What part of the unit are you wanting to do, entire thing, the bits under the hood or the bits under the dash?
