To professional musicians

thats about how I feel right now. Im at a major fork in the road of my life, and I have no map.

I've always been good with computers. Im majoring in computer science, i have a computer job, everyone asks for my help etc etc...

My problem is that I dont know if thats what I want in life. Computers are cool and everything, but...its not what I want to spend most of my time on earth doing.

I've been playing in a band for about a year now (bass player), and it feels like we have something special going. I love music. I fucking love it. I love the expression and the freedom it provides. I think my life would be much more fulfilling if I were to pursue music completely.

Has anyone else ever been in a similar situation? I'm not interested in becoming a pop star or anything, I just want to make a decent living and play music. How hard is it? Is it worth it?

I dont want to be stuck in a cubicle. It scares the fuckin shit out of me.
 
why not balance both a job and music?
unless you're completely sure you want to drop everything to pursue music, why not find a job that'll meet your financial neeRAB and create music?
 
Im majoring in software and information systems. But I love music. I've played drums in a garage band type of deal with frienRAB before I'm really not good enough to take it professionally. I did band all through HS and marching band/drumline and such and had a blast. I love messing around recording music and such. I love going to concerts. But I don't know anyway with my skills I can really end up doing anything with it to make a living, so i continue with my current major.
 
Been there. Done that. Gave in.

I have no problem with the stable lifestyle... especially now that I am a little older. You can still gig on weekenRAB, and make good money at the same time. Plus, if you need to do a small tour, taking a Friday/Monday off is a possibility. Then, if the music keeps gathering momentum... adjust from there and do it full time.

I'm much happier being stable and doing music for myself.
 
As a person in a signed touring band....

This is your reality, is your band selling out the larger local venues on their own? Do you have shirts, a CD, stickers ect...? Are you touring with your band to neighboring states? If you can't say yes to all of these then you need to keep your day job and have your band as a hobby. Until your band is doing this you won't be making enough $ to support yourself. Most signed acts have a job when they aren't on tour unless they are selling 100k+ albums.
