To Moose Man--Going from T3 to TX. What do you think?

Moose Man: Since you are my palming guru, I need advice. Considering yet another hardware upgrade from t3 to tx. I am very well versed in palm os way back from my V days. The main attraction to me in the tx is wifi and basic web access. Question--if I am anywhere on the planet and there is a wifi hot spot, will this unit work, or is it only designed for domestic use. Also, will all my backed up t3 stuff transition into the tx ok. Was also considering a Treo, again just for basic web use. I travel globally a lot. I have an excellent quad band phone, but the thought of not lugging a laptop or searching out an internet cafe just to check emails or quickie news updates, really makes the tx sound appealing. Would appreciate your opinion before I take the plunge. Thanks for your time. SMCUVS aka Steve and Surfer dude

I am pretty sure Mooseman is in the middle of a house move. It may be a couple of days before the dust settles and he has his stuff (computer) set up and is able to answer you.

Well why he's away i'll take his place if you dont mind :p

I moved from a T|E to a T|X, so in some cases, it is similar to yours (ie. I had no wifi etc. on T|E).

The T|X will work with most if not all WiFi hotspots around the world but some do require a fee or a pre-paid account. The T|X uses the same system that most laptops/dekstops would use so it is globally similar.

The main difference between using the GSM network (Treo) and Wifi is that you can use the GSM network anywhere you have coverage. While WiFi you have to find a hotspot.

And lastly, all your programs/PIM Db's should be fine. Although there is one thing. If you've installed a program that requires some file along the lines of 'appsliprotate' then i think that may cause a problem on the T|X, but that's no problem because it can be easily removed from the backup folder so that the first time you HotSync your T|X/Treo then all will be the same as if you were on your T3.

G'day Camski...Thanks for your reply. I travel globally a lot. In fact I was in Sydney last week. The Starbucks at Darling Harbour has hot coffee and a HOT SPOT. My thinking regarding the TX is that no matter where I am, there is usually a wifi signal floating around that I can poach from. If not I can always find a dedicated hot spot. I was considering a Treo, but I need a tri-band. I know the 650 is a quad, but the 700s are only dual and neither have wifi. Since I already have a great little Samsung quad that picks up Telstra and soon as I get to Sydney, I don't think I really need the phone. I just need basic web access without hauling around my laptop. From my research and your information I think the TX will do the job. I was mainly concerned about the hot sync. I have a lot of info in my t3 and it is all safely backed up on my pc. I just hope it all gets to the tx if I do make the change.
Again, thanks for your reply....Cheers

It's true. You will be able to connect most of the hot spots around the world. And yes some of these networks would ask for a fee or a pre-paid account but other things that would hinder you to use the wifi capability of your TX is its compatibility of the router/access point being used. Remember, All palm devices except LIFEDRIVE is compatible only with WIRELESS B routers/access points. The LIFEDRIVE is an exception because it is also compatible to some selected WIRELESS G routers/access points.

DJCORTFER--I am not as smart as you. I have no idea what you are talking about re wireless b routers/access points. My wireless mentality stems from my Dell with Centrino. If I take it to another location, (not a designated hot spot), I always seem to grab on to a weak but usable signal in order to access the web. Not fast, but usable. When I am home using my router in the house I get a strong signal. I was just thinking that the TX would work the same way. In designated hot spots==strong signal. Just wandering around a city street or neighborhood===a weak signal, but a signal none the less. Somebody in the area always seems to be wireless with a router on their windowsill or somplace. Are you telling me I am wrong in my assumption regarding the fact that the TX could pick up stray signals and allow me to log on.
Thanks for your input

There are two common configurations of WIFI routers/access points: WIRELESS B and WIRELESS G. Laptops and DESKTOP PCs can connect to both of these configurations but the palm devices with the exception of LIFEDRIVE can connect only with WIRELESS B routers. If you are able to connect to your home router then that means you are using a WIRELESS B router or MIXED mode (supports both configurations).. you can verify this with the manufacturer of your router. Now going back to the issue at hand - if you are able to connect to any wifi network signal that you are able to pick up, then no problem. what i am just trying to say is, if there will be one of these networks/hotspots that you will have problems connecting to - you need to verify to things: if it is using the compatible configuration or if it has a security (WEP encryption keys).

G'day :p enjoy Sydney? I myself love it here :d

Anyway... jfcortfer is essentially backing up what i said. This 'wireless B' is the same thing your laptop uses and is the most commonly used one around hot spots AND routers (i'm pretty sure you use B at home as well).

In terms of PIM data (To-do, memo's, noted, agenda etc.) all that will be restored to the T|X Easily, so that's nothing to worry about.

Have fun!
Camski

Bugger, you beat me to it :p
Righto, if you dont understand what he said you dont really need to know other than the fact that if you scan wifi networks using the TX there will be a little padlock icon next to the networks name if it has 'WEP' security (meaning it requires a password to access). Some hotspots require a WEP key or similar which is provided on payment or pre-paid accounts. Other hotspots require a login with username and password, while others are free.

Most McDonals around Sydney have WiFi but you need to have an account. StarBuck's i'm not sure but they may require an account.

Wow. That's what I love about this site, you really learn stuff. Thanks Camski and djcortfer. You both broke it down into layman's terms. The unit will arrive tomorrow. I will charge it, Sync it and start cruisin for signals now that I know what to look for. The true test will be next week in Hong Kong, however since that city is one gigantic hot spot, signals should be plentiful (within the limitation you both described).
BTW, this unit does have full screen grafitti like my t3--right?
Thanks again for your patience and help.

Actually, if the hot spot is set to run in mixed mode then all of the palm devices will connect. I have a Wireless G router at home that will allow mixed mode connections. My T5 and Wifi card work perfectly in B mode, while my laptop and other devices use G flawlessly. It all depends on how the access point was set-up...

SMCUVS - as drbaer pointed out I've been in the middle of a full blown relocation and have been off line for about 10 days. Barely back on now because still unpacking but needed a break and a test of my FIOS connection.

It looks as though Camski, djcortfer and Collumb have answered all of your questions - which is why you've got to love the net and this forum.

M2C - a TX (although I don't have one) would give you the benefit of being able to connect via Bluetooth enable phone (slow but useful) and wifi when available. As pointed out some require encryption or money to use - those might not be very useful due to potential time out issues but since you've ordered one, I think you'll enjoy it.

Moose Man: Moving is a real b***h. (Don't want the administrator to delete this post). When you get more settled in can you answer this one for me. I did get the TX. After several tries and 5 hard resets, I was able to sync all of my data and 3rd party apps. I was even able to find two of the apps that were corrupting my tx and I deleted those forever. The wifi is working great and picks up stray signals from every router in the hood. Not all are strong signals but good enough to do the job.
I still have my t3 that I was to use as a back up for my Calendar, Contacts and Tasks only as the Calendar in particular has become invaluable for recalling events long past. If I do a hard reset on the t3, configure the custom hotsync to install calendar, contacts and tasks only and have the computer override the hand held, will that do the job? BTW both hand helds have the same username, will that cause any problems in the sync process?
When you get the time after you have opened your last box, let me know at your convenience.
I have one word for you----minimalist. Makes moving a lot easier.

SMCUVS,

You can not use two Palm devices with the same username - it will cause nothing but problems. You can hard Reset the T3 to clear the username and then create a new one via the Palm Desktop. Now for the bad news - if you are using the Palm Desktop - two different devices can not see the same data such as calendar or contacts.

Now if you are using Outlook - that's a different matter - you can tell the conduits to read the same mailbox profile without any glitches. But that's a bit more complex then present time will allow.....still unpacking so back to that but did want you to avoid the complexities of same username issues.
