in chapter 12 there is this quote... "what you want Lulu?" she asked in tones i had never heard her use. what is the problem in this scene? what does Jem want to do to defuse the situation? How is the conflict resolved?
 
the reason calpurnia is using these tones is because she is in a black church being confronted by a black woman. this shows that she has a different set of mannerisms and tones for work and for her personal life. i also think that she feels the need to assert her power over lula and this is how she does it. the conflict is resolved when the rest of the congregation butt lula out of the way and greet jem and scout amiably.
