To army men that have been in a war:?

I'm writing a novel and I just need general information of what it's like for men (preferably married) in a war time setting, like in Iraq.

Anything you remember would be helpful: jobs, daily activities, the locals, the food, what you wear, how it smells, where you sleep, and general names and terms for different things.

No answer is too short or too long! Military wives feedback welcome!

Thanx!
it doesn't have to have been iraq: really any desert type country is fine :D
I don't know the difference lol

I was married and in the Nam in 1968, maybe that's to far back for you. My job was to kill people, Infantry unit designated sniper. Look up the battle of Hue City on the Perfume River it'll help. While we assaulted the city I was to take high ground if I could get there for sniping cover fire. Daily activities was trying to stay out of sight and not move! The locals we encounter we scared, hungry and poor, most of the time they were hiding or running for the conflict. Our food was C-rats made back in 1941, try a month or two of those. We slept wherever we laid down, mostly in the rubble pile of rock from the bombed out buildings of the city. The smell was that of burning flesh, a copper smell in the air, the stench of the vegetation of the River comes to mind, dirt, dust, vomit!

When that was over and we went back to the jungle you had pretty much the same with the exception of the buildings. The smell of the jungle was just rotten vegetation, leaches were everywhere, snakes and in some spots you couldn't see 5 feet in front of you. When it rained you got swamped for days at a time and you couldn't here the person standing next to you it came down so hard. Mud, lots of it!

Not good memories really!
