tmobile g1 the very first one. great condition.battery problem?

OK I have a g1 and the battery will say half charged I will monitor it but it doesn't move after about 2 minutes it just dies and the battery says half still it just goes black and I turn it on. Dies again but quicker. Can someone please help me before I order and expensive battery for it
