Episode 7.04 The Engagement Ring
Original air date: October 03, 2008
Written by ___________

Previously on Back to the Sewer: The brothers make their first trip into the Internets to retrieve their decompiled Master Splinter. Once there, they were attacked by Cyber-Shredder: Ch'rell's personality and memories, inside Viral's...okay, so we don't know what exactly remains of her. In any case, they thought, and the turtles were able to collect the first few bits of their master.

This week, on Back to the Sewer: Casey plans to propose to April, and he enlists Raphael to help him pick up the ring. Hun is involved somewhere.

Note: Hun's voice actor in this season, for the record, is David Zen Mansley (Bishop, Darius Dun)--or at least he's supposed to be; the credits still credit Greg Carey. In any case, I'm curious to see how he'll sound.

What, no one is going to comment on this? :p

Personally, I found the proposal scene cute and touching. Especially when April teared up.

Then we get some random plot involving a magic ring that turned her into a demon. It felt very much like some of the TMNT 87' plots to me, except without puns.

Oh, and Hun's back! He sounds more like he did originally, so that's good. But his new look is odd...and so was that random blushing and freaking out when he saw Raphael.

Overall, I liked this episode and think it was the best one of the season so far. Though, it'll be painful to wait another five weeks for a new episode.

Episode 4 “Engadgement Ring”

Not a bad episode, it’s a simple story and it does explain a few things.

Rumors of Shredder getting ready to return are being spread (Probably by Khan) and his former minion Hun is panicking. So he is searching for sources of power that could match Shredder. It makes sense Hun sort of lost respect for his master when he found out Shredder was an utrom.

At the same time it turns out that Hun has taken credit for the Turtles disappearance, claiming he has killed them and is using their old weapons as proof. So while Khan is spreading rumors of Shredder returning he is leaving the Turtles return a secret. I guess there is some logic to that.

This episode felt like a mix of “Dragon’s Brew” and “All Howls Thieves” but not really as good as ether. Still it was not bad. It was a good set up for the rest of the episodes to come and it was a nice Casey, Raph and April tale.
7/10

This episode felt like a pre-FF ep. Very enjoyable. And I'm really starting to warm up to April's redesign.

Yeah, Hun sounded great. They actually took the time to lower the pitch of his voice this season.

And yes, I was chuckling when he was blushing at Raphael. Kind of...disturbing.

Five weeks?

Great episode, probably the best of the season.

So all those other Purple Dragon died when April blew up the helicopter? We didn't get a "I can see their parachutes!" type of line. Where is Tien when you need him?

Overall I really liked this episode, the darkness from the previous seasons returned such as Hun threatening to cut off April's finger and a lot of other moments.

I hope this show gets a Season 8, I really love this animation and I want to see it continue.

Even though it wasn't my favorite, I had warmed up to the Replacement Hun voice. But that being said, it's GREAT seeing Greg Carey back as Hun. Much more menacing.

That said, did anyone notice that the animation actually seemed to match Season 1, or at least improve allot, when Casey was sliding the ring off of the Monsters finger? It didn't look all that cheap.

Boy, in the old series and new, April doesn't have good luck with keeping apartments that don't get destroyed.

1987 -
Old Apartment building destroyed by mousers. Bebop and Rocksteady blow a whole in her floor with a missle, giving Mrs.Kowalchick a surprise of four green guys. A bit later, she gets a surprise of Dregg dropping into her floor when it again gets half destroyed :).

2003 -
April's Building gets burned by Shredder, and now gets destroyed by giant bug like monsters... 3 or so years later.

You know, I wonder if Usagi and Gen will be invited to this wedding? That would explain the photo of Peter Laird watching a BTTS episode that appeared to have a blurred Usagi on screen talking to Donatello.

I could have done without that 'And you saved me' line from April at the end. It wasn't needed and stating the obvious. Edit it out and you'd have a fine ending...

Don't forget that April's apartment was on fire in the 1989 Arcade Game. Anyone else think they modelled her apartment in BttS after the one in TMNT? They look similar, and even one of the windows is near a fire escape in both.

Since they didn't have a new Pokemon episode on this morning, I was finally able to watch a new episode of TMNT: Back to the Sewer. I thought that it was really cool and so enjoyable. Raphael helping out Casey with the ring was kind of cool. The whole proposal scene was so cute and happy. Seeing both Casey and April being so happy made me feel all warm and fuzzy. I'm a sucker for those kind of moments. I knew something was up with that ring when it started glowing. Though seeing it take over April's mind and pretty much caused her to become a demon was not something I expected.

It seemed like Hun wanted that ring in order to create those monsters, even though he knew of the consequences. It was kind of weird to see how surprised Hun was when he saw Raphel. Though, taking create for killing the turtles was kind of a surprise, even though it also fits with his character. I do agree that his new outfit and design was kind of odd, but his voice seemed fine to me.

Wow, Hun threatening to cut off April's finger was pretty dark. April turning full demon was also pretty creepy. I did like how Leo, Don and Mikey came out to help. They certainly needed it. I was looking for any of the purple dragons to come out of that helicopter, but I don't think any of them did. It was cool to see how Casey was so determined to get the ring off since he loves April so much. I was glad that the man gave them a different ring. The ending where they were all hugging and happy for the wedding was so sweet.

It was an overall fun episode and I'm hoping that I'll be able to see more of this season when its at a different time slot.

Rewatching the episode and there is a parachute that opens up mere moments before the chopper explodes. So April did not kill the Purple Dragon who was piloting it. Though it was hard to see.

Yeah, where'd he get it? Did he just run out and spend $500?

Actually, I know I'm not supposed to question anything in a show about talking karate turtles. I'm just bringing this up.

Even though this is a separate continuity, Casey proposing to April really felt like a moment 19 years in the making. Now the only question is if she's going to take his name, and I hope not, as "April Jones" isn't as catchy.

Well... I'm still trying to be patient with how this show is going. It feels like it wants to move backt to 2K3, but doesn't quite feel like it's "there" yet.

With that said, I definitely loved the fight that Leo and Casey had with Hun. It had some of that 2K3 brutality that I was waiting for.

There are bits and pieces there, no doubt. Now they just have to go in for the kill... but will this series take that kind of step? We'll see. They still have me hanging on, so I guess they're doing something right.

Um...the guy sells rings; that's why Raph and Casey were looking for him. As to why he had the ring at the ready, I'm guessing that's one of the small mysteries surrounding the character, just like his ability to be able to meet the helicopter when it landed and the explanation as to why he possesed the ring in the first place.

Random thoughts:

So Hun has new digs, as does, apparently, April--that definitively was not the old "2nd Time Around" building. I find it weird, however, that April would have moved and not have Casey moved in with her. And seriously, what is it with crime syndicates and skyscrapers?

More confirmation that the Foot has been out of commision for the past year. I have to say that the writers have been doing a great job handling sub-plots this season.

I can only recall one other on-screen marriage proposal in American animation; Xanatos' proposal to Fox in Gargoyles. In both occasions, the woman ends up being turned into a monster by the enagement jewelry. People should just not propose in Manhattan, it seems.

I'd been hoping that the new, distinct designs for the Purple Dragons would come with distinct personalities, but no such luck here. Here's hoping that changes in the future.

Figures: I make the comment that crediting Greg Carey as Hun in the credits is a mistake, and we get an episode where he is voiced, if not by Carey himself, a dead ringer for him. If it is indeed Carey, I'm left wondering what the circunstance to his return were; if it's actually Mansley...damn.

So we have the Ring of Ying. Anybody want to take any bets on wether we'll see the Ring of Yang before the season's over?

More comments later.

You've gotta admit that the writing doesn't seem pointless anymore, like it did in Fast Forward. Too borrow another thread discussion, almost as if Q5 was brought in for Fast Forward, and got fired when Back to the Sewers came in ;)..

I'm still hoping the Dark Turtles appear in some form again, although it probably won't be in this season, more likely the next.
