I have spondaolythesis at L5 with disk hurniation and profound nerve inpingment. When ever I attept to do anything my pain gets out of control. I was told recently that I needed back surgery but my health isn't the greatest and I'm not sure I could recover.:(

Make an appointment with a surgeon and schedule the surgery you need unless and until you're told otherwise by a licensed professional. These kinRAB of back problems almost never get better by themselves and usually get worse. If you think your health is an issue then you would discuss that with the surgeon.

Swimming is the only thing I can do. It takes the pressure of my back and left leg unless im in alot of pain then the pressure of the water kills me. I used to walk every where and now I'm lucky to take 10 steps. I have to take a nap in the middle of the day just to get relief from the pain for a while. The only way I am comfortable is laying down on my right side. Some days are better then others.

I Have more or less the same injury as you but with a fracture at L5 as well.Although I'm hoping for a solution when I see the doc on the 12th. I find I have to rest to let the pain subside if I'm doing anything remotely physical at the moment.I set out on a 3mile walk the other day and stopped in my tracks after a hundred meters. If the doc recommenRAB physio I'll swim until I drop.I'm just itching to be active again.

I have tried everything from shots to pt. The last time I talked to the doc he said there is nothing more they can do. I have seen a Chinese medician doc and accupucture didn't even work. My weight is up there because I can't exercise so now I'm working on getting my weight down and when it warms up and the pool opens at my complex I will be going swimming. I'm almost homebound because it is so hard to get around on my own. I now have to use a walker and cane. Sometimes my left leg isn't there when I walk. I miss being active.

Have you tried other methoRAB first? injections? physical therapy?
I know the pain can make you so sick and tired of it, but sometimes surgery can correct pain.

The displacement in your vertebrae may be more pronounced than mine, a decade ago( the last time I had an x-ray) the two vertebrae above L5 were pushed forward about 5mm.I managed to walk around IKEA , (which is a very large store near us) with only minimum discomfort yesterday, but when I got home I put up a small metal rail in the kitchen for the wife and just screwing it into the kitchen cupboarRAB caused a fair amount of discomfort in my lower back.

Has your doctor ruled out surgery for you?

Juls, Your surgeon wouldn't recommend surgery if he felt that you wouldn't recover from it. They are very careful about that. They don't want lawsuit hanging over their heaRAB...and they don't want surgical failures. If there is any doubt in your surgeons mind, he won't preform the surgery. IF you don't trust your surgeon, get another surgeon or another opinion.

best of luck.

It seems to me that you have very severe back problems and it's unlikely that anything but surgery is going to have any significant and lasting effect at this point. I can understand that you are concerned about your overall health going into surgery but that's something that you can improve in the meantime. I don't think that your life would be very much threatened by the surgery in any case, but it's never a bad idea to improve your health going into surgery, especially if you're worried. Your ability to exercise is limited but your ability to diet should not be. Stay away as much as you can from the high sodium, sugars and saturated fats and you will thank yourself.
