Tips for year-long backpacking trip through Europe and Asia?

Hey,
3 of my friends and I are planning on taking a year off from college and traveling around Europe and Asia. We are hoping to start in London in August, traveling south through Europe for a few months, and ending up in Egypt by December. From there, we're going to try to find a way to make it to India, and then travel around Asia for the rest of the year. What are some things we will definitely need? We're each planning on getting a ~50L backpack, so space is somewhat limited. Do you think we should bring a winter jacket, or just a rain jacket and layer?
