Tips for "urban backpacking?"?

Ok. So here's the deal, i'm not really going to be doing urban backpacking because everynight i'll be staying in a family members home. Normally urban backpackers sleep in hostels or camp out everynight, which can be dangerous. I won't be sleeping in hostels or hotels, or anything of the sort. I have it planned to arrive at a relatives house in time for sleeping. Here's the general idea:

My boyfriend and i want to travel northern california area to vist family. However, we can't afford to drive my truck. So i thought we'd backpack it. Basically, we will be travelling from Sacramento to Clearlake area, then to Menlo Park area, and then to San Jose. And finally, back home. We were planning on travelling via bus, train, by foot, and by taxi (if necesary, but not preferred.) I need any tips you'd be willing to offer. Like what buses to take, what buses not to take. Anything that would help with the safety and the ease of the trip.
