Tips for a good chili for a beginning cook?

I've only made chili once and the way the weather is where I live, it's making me want some!...

Anyways, when I made it the first time it turned out great. I was so surprised with myself. Unfortunately I didn't write anything down about what I'd put in it or what spices I'd used, so I'm hoping I can make it happen again. I'll be making it in my slow-cooker and I'm fixing to head off to the store to get some items for it. Any tips you'd like to share with me for a great chili?

I love the McCormick Chili Mix. Follow the directions.

I make some additions.

I saute an onion and green pepper with the meat.(I use ground Turkey
breast)

I use one can of tomato sauce and one can of Rotel.

I add the dark red kidney beans and I also add a can of black beans rinsed.

This is a really great tasting chili.I mix it with some cooked ditilini.

I top it with chopped onion and grated cheddar. I like a splash of hot pepper sauce too.

Also good with tamales and Jalepeno cornbread.
