Timing on a Motorola Canopy Module?

Ok,, so the CMM uses GPS to obtain timing. Supposedly the timing makes it so the AP's don't talk over each other. My question is,, since the AP's don't sync to GPS directly,,, and get thier clock from the CMM, why even bother with the GPS in the first place?
