Hello,

I'll try to keep this brief. Had pneumonia six years ago, since then lungs have been puny. Used to get lots of sinus infections, now everything goes to my lungs. Fine in summer, terrible in winter. No allergies, only irritants or triggers. Allergist had me on singulair, pulmicort and flonase. Doing so well this winter and then last week, WHAM. Started with acid indigestion then suddenly my lungs were full. Doc says I have asthma, put me on prednisone and a z-pac if necessary (which I ended up taking since I felt so bad). I've only been to work 2 1/2 days in the last two weeks.

Started a nebulizer two days ago. Cough is much better, I can breathe easier, but I now sleep all the time and still feel terrible.

What little is coming out of my lungs is very thick and very white. With all of my previous sinus and lung issues, I've never seen anything like this. It is SO THICK. At least it isn't yellow or green.

My questions -- is this normal -- and when can I expect to start feeling better?

Thanks very much, this board has been very helpful to me.

Getting asthma under control can be difficult in the beginning. I assume you have a daily med (Flovent, Advair, etc) though you didn't mention it. And it's alittle known fact that some strains of pneumonia can cause asthma (that's what happened to me at age 50). Are you seeing a pulmonologist? i strongly suggest it.

I also suggest you read "About Asthma Action Plans", a post a little below this one as it gives an excellent overview.

Yes, daily pulmicort and flonase with xopenex (sp) as needed. Due to insurance, doc just switched me to ventolin.

The nebulizer has helped significantly. I am just so surprised at how terrible I have felt. Everyone asks me if I've had the flu. It seems weird that a new diagnosis of asthma could knock me this far down, but it sure has.

All the women on one side of my family were diagnosed with asthma as adults, and I saw how much control it had over their lives. Of course, years ago, they were surrounded by smokers. I have never smoked and I totally avoid it. However, tThe older I get, the worse my lungs get, and I don't want to continue on this downhill slide.

Thanks for the the info, I appreciate it.
