Ticket issued to me on car I sold...person never changed tags...HELP!?

Sold a car to someone I worked with a year ago...we got title notorized and everything. He said he was going to go get tags...I didn't even think to take plates off. I just got a letter in the mail stating I had a warrant out for my arrest. I called the court office and they told me I was issued a ticket for expired tags on that car (it was parked at time of ticket). Apparently, this guy went to court posing as me and even forged my signature, but failed to pay the fine or court costs. I don't know where to go from here? I talked to officer and he said come down to office and get a court date and try to dispute it, but I am leary. Any advice would be helpful...has this happened to any of you????
 
you should have called the dmv and verified he changed plate do you live in one of the states where the plate stays with the car like texas if not you should have taken the plate of you could mali the dmv a copy of the bill of say explaining the situation
