Throbbing heartbeat when waking up... anyone?

I'm 28 years old and healthy so far as I know.

But when I woke up today, my heart was beating really fast, and it wouldn't slow down. So I tried sitting up in bed, it didn't help much. Getting up to walk around, i noticed I was feeling more numb than usual and I had sweaty hands and feet, and it felt like my legs were rubbery as they didn't move easily. My mouth was dry and I had an odd taste. The more I moved, the more my heart pounded and the more I felt lightheaded and weak. Let me tell you, I was scared to death.

So I walked slowly back to bed and tried to do "calm" breathing exercises. This was hard with all the anxiety I was feeling, but I managed to get my heart beat a little slower doing this. But when I tried to get up and walk again, the heart pounding came back, so I stayed in bed for a longer time. Eventually I got up for the day, although throughout the entire day I did have a faster heartbeat than usual, some numbness, dry mouth, fogginess (more than usual). I might still have the faster heartbeat now (which would make it over 12 hours later), although the heart pounding is mostly gone.

I really don't know why this happened. I had my usual 3-4 cups of regular strength coffee the night before, and I didn't notice any fast heart beat then. I have a huge caffeine tolerance having been a caffeine addict for more than 8 years. Long after I had the coffee, however, I was getting very anxious and feeling "off-kilter" in some way--it was uncomfortable and I couldn't sleep. Usually I can sleep with caffeine in my system, but not this time. So I went and took one capsule of 100mg L-theanine, which is the calming amino acid in green tea. I had taken them many times before without any problem, and they do help me relax so I can sleep.

So then fast forward to the morning when I woke up, and I got the heart pounding. Then I found out that my brother, around the same time as me, was having a very strange episode. I heard him breathing deeply outside my door, which I thought was troubling. He did remember feeling very nauseous throughout the morning, and lightheaded and weak a little, like me.

We thought it was strange that both of us had bizarre symptoms at the same time, the same day. We looked back to what we ate the night before... cheesesteaks from the same restaurant. I noted that I did have nausea and strong gastric upset that morning, too (I wasn't able to eat without getting nausea for half the day.) The question is if "bad food" could have caused some of the symptoms I had?

I still have a faster heartbeat than normal, it does seem to get faster when I get up from sitting/lying to walk, but for the most part it does not accelerate like it did when I first woke up. Could this be a panic attack?
