Ok...after reading a lot of the threaRAB here about GERD and LPR I decided that I would make my own Thread because I am still a little confused. I want to say beforehand that I am 19 years old.

It all started at work, I had severe chest pains with a feeling of heartburn. I had to leave work to go to the Hospital to see what was wrong. After hours of tests they told me I had Pleurisy, a condition where the lining of the lungs becomes inflammed. They said in about 7 days it would go away and I would be fine. So I temporarily stopped smoking and took the 800 grams of Ibuprofhen I was told to take (Couldn't afford the Motrin). It went away. I started smoking again. It was after that I noticed that about a month later every so often when I would inhale the tabacco, there would be a 'jerking' sensation in the back of my throat. I didn't know why, but it never stopped me from smoking.

Shortly after I got laid of in the first week of Deceraber, I got Pluerisy AGAIN, only a month after I had originally gotten it. I took the Ibu again. But it never really seemed to work. Although, it went away again. But only a few days after being pain free, all of a sudden my throat started swelling and I got the chest pains and burning sensations in my chest back. I assumed the troat swelling was a part of the Pluerisy, like maybe it was a severe side effect. So I continued to take the Ibuprofen until I started getting really bad stomach cramps. It happened mostly as I ate, and shortly after I would get Diarreah (hope I spelled that right). Either while I ate or after I would get nauseous.

I also got migranes and neck pains, joint pains, and fatigue. This has been going on for a month and at this pioint I am feeling rather helpless. I have dry coughing and little to NO mucous.

I have had two trips to the Hospital ( without healthcare because I got laid off ) and both times I was told nothing was wrong. The only symptom tha has really stuck with me is the burning chest pains, terrible sore throat, the constant taste of scar tissue, and the constant swelling of my throat. I also sometimes feel like there is a ball of mucous or something stuck at the base of my throat and nothing I do can get it out. I am always drinking water, hardly eating, and am forced to stay awake because of the bad throat swelling. I panic a lot because of this and I am always hungry and tired.

Whatever is wrong with me is making my life miserable and I am afraid of each day because it seems to only be getting worse.

I am going to my Doctor to ask to see a ENT, and request an upper Endoscopy to see what is wrong, or scoping as they called it. This is another problem because I am so terrified of anything going down my throat. I can't even swallow pills....

Now, onto this "Shortness of Breath". I envision panting when someone says this as a symptom. But for me, I don't know if I have this or not. What I DO know is that I mostly feel like I can't get enough air in, like I have to take deeper breathes. But I do not pant. It is worse when I lay down to sleep.

I think I may have ruined myself without thinking, because my past eating recorRAB were usually always spicy things, and I went on what I called the "Cheetos Diet", where I ate nothing but my beloved Hot Cheetos all day, every day, for a few days, even over a week. I grew up on spicy food. And I'm sure smoking did not help...

I guess I am just looking for help. I have been seriously considering suicide as of late. That is how much I am suffering and I just want to be pain free. I opted to talk instead to keep my mind off of killing myself, because I don't really want to. I love living, but the constant pain and fear do strange things to my thoughts.

Is there something I can do to stop my throat from swelling?

I can't answer to all of your symptoms, but the ibuprofen is not helping your stomache. When you take it, be sure and eat something first, taking the amount you take can and will cause gerd, also esophageal spasms, which mimic a heart attack. Have the endoscopy, they can give you a sedative to calm you down. When you are done, you will have an answer to at least one of your problems. I have had 3 endoscopys, they are just uncomfortable, they don't hurt, and if you get a sedative, you won't even know it has been done. Let us know how you are...

Hi, I understand what your going through, your not alone. I came down with ashtma like symtoms last deceraber. I am 15 and a very active basketball player and now im on homeschool, not playing basketball, can barely walk from one place to 200 yarRAB to another place. I also get very dizzy and light headed often. I undestand the chest pain. I dont know why i have it. The doctors dont know why i have it. I have had bad luck with doctors. I have little energy, i can barely do anything but i have to stay strong because i have been to the low point, and i hated life, but i just sit and think for hours on end, and realize that im young and the harder i fight the faster i will be back up and going.

I have had an upper GI and a ct scan now.
Dont worry about getting an endoscopy done. They can sedate you completely if you dont want to be awake. I havent had one done but some close frienRAB of mine have, and she was just fine after hers. she remerabers nothing, woke up in recovery and felt good.

Try to start taking some pepsid or zantac. They can be pricey but get a house brand from like a grocery store and then they wont be too expensive.
I agree that you probably shouldnt be taking so much ibuprophen. It isnt good for the stomach.

I hope your able to get this done with no insurance. I know doctors and medicine is very pricey. This summer my parents were both layed off, and i came down with pnemonia and my doctor couldnt diagnose me with it, so i ended up being sick for about 3 months, like in bed sick, and with a horrible cough, and really bad chest pain since.

Stay strong. Its the only way to get healthier. Stand up for yourself and get help :)

I just want to say "Thank You" to those of you who replied so far to my thread. I have stopped taking Ibuprofen, and I have also started taking Pepcid about twice a day. Actually, yesturday was the first day I started to take it, and I really felt a difference. I waited about an hour before eating [ I took one soon after I woke up and an hour before dinner ] and for that day my throat was barely swelling. It did swell a little here and there, but nothing too bad. I was really excited.

But, sadly, last night was actually a bad night. I had pretty bad throat swelling to the point that I got really anxious. Also, I am unsure of if it was the Pepcid or what, but while in the car yesturday, all of a sudden I got what I can describe as a "Hot Flash". And I felt extremely weak during and after this episode. I still feel weak. And since I tried to sleep last night, I have a "Breathless" feeling, like I can't get enough air in. That worries me too.

I am calling to get insurance today, then I will see my Doctor, then get transferred to an ENT, then get a scope. I am writing down all of my symptoms before I go the Doctor's Office so I don't forget.

I will update as I do things.

Hi Chronically sick! Please hang in there! You will get this figured out. Most of us here have been dealing with these symptoms for quite some time. The throat swelling thing was and is my biggest fear. The feeling of not being able to breathe is quite frightening. I would get a scope done, stay on the acid reflux meRAB, watch your diet, cut out those spicy things! And you might consider checking your vitamin D level. Make sure it isn't too low. That is what caused alot of my acid reflux and digestive trouble. You will be ok! Think positive! Life has too many great things to offer! You have your whole life ahead of you sweetie! Big hugs!! Keep us posted!

Ok, I believe I have this figured out! Last time I went to the ER, the doctor said, "I don't think it will work, but I will give you some Zanax."

He gave me this before taking me through all these tests, because I told him I felt very anxious and a little panicked. Nothing came up on these tests, and all of my vitamin levels were fine. I had a CT scan and all.

After maybe 30 minutes, I noticed my throat was losing that 'swelling' feeling.

They gave me a perscription for Zanax just to help with keeping me calm and getting rid of that anxiety and stressful feelings. And within the SECOND time of taking this tiny pill, each time I noticed that almost instantly my throat stopped this 'swelling' feeling.

And since then I feel normal again, and I have days where nothing is wrong. I can eat, sleep, and do as I wish.

I believe my stress and anxiety is what caused the tensing in my body, and eventually all that stress caused my muscles to spasm, including my neck muscles. And now with the Zanax calming my brain, I am not only stress free, but pain free.

I am so very happy. So please, suggest Zanax to your doctor and see if this works for you!

Hi there, I undertand what you are experiencing, I have suffered from acid reflux for many years and it's never really been an issue. Recently I develoloped serious problems with my voice and throat and I went to a specialist where I had a gastroscopy done as he felt it that my reflux could possibly be causing the problem. I was put on Protium 40 initially but my GP put me on Protium 20 after about three months(mistake on her part possibly) which has controlled it but I still get reflux from time to time. I have been on protium for 6 months approx but my vocal issues still exist. Basically I have a white coated tonge, and when I speak my throat gets sore, dry and irritated. An ENT examined it and he said there was signs of arytenoiditis. This is having a huge negative impact on my life as I am completley dependant on my voice. somebody on this thread recommended xanax but doesn;t that cause gerd as it relaxes the oesophageal sphinxer muscle allowing acid to run into you oesophogus.
