Thoughts on Philip Seymour Hoffman?

So I was looking at his IMDb and all of a sudden it hit me, this guy might just be the best actor around today. It was crazy looking at all the great movies he's been in, Sydney, Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski, Magnolia, Almost Famous, Punch-Drunk Love... and his lead roles in Capote, The Savages, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Doubt. He's amazing. I rarely see him mentioned.

BQ: On a list of the greatest performances of all time, where does his performance in Capote rank? It's a solid top 20 in my opinion.

Philip Seymour Hoffman does get a lot of critical praise, but most people unfamiliar with his resume only seem to remember him as the guy who sharted himself in Along Came Polly. So, he *is* highly respected, with a lot of people regarding him as one of the better actors in the industry, but..I guess the general mainstream theatergoers are just unaware of his background.

Also, he's obviously friends with Paul Thomas Anderson (Punch-Drunk Love, Boogie Nights, Magnolia), and that makes for him getting some terrific roles in some of best films being released because Anderson is easily one of the best directors today.

Hoffman has the lead in Anderson's next movie, (tentatively titled) The Master.

I am seeing that movie week one.
