Thoughts on a 2000 Monster 750 Dark

I am possibly going to look at a 2000 Monster 750 Dark.

From the pictures the bike looks good. Only mods are shortened factory pipes and a K&N air filter. The bike has about 7200 miles, reported to never have been down and clear title

Now the bad. It is over due for it 6000 mile service. I would think at a the least it will need belts, valve check/adjust, all fluids flushed/replaced and probly a new battery. I thinking atleast a $600-$700 service bill.

I guess my questions are:

1. What would be a fair price to pay? It is priced at $3,500 neg. KBB puts retail at $2,900 trade value is around $2,200.
2. Are there any things to look for with this bike?
3. Is this bike pretty durable or were they mechanical nightmares?

Thank you to all,

Lance

He will mistakenly believe a low mileage bike is worth more. You won't convince him he's wrong.

It's probably a fair price, his asking price I mean.

All those things you mentioned plus add in some tyres.. and from experience.. 3 oil filters and 2 gallons of cheap mineral bike oil plus one gallon of good oil you want to keep using.

Warm, flush & filter, Saturday ride & flush& filter, Sunday ride, Flush and filter using the GOOD oil.

If it's been sitting and unridden for that long the change and clutch will be really poor for a little while. We could barely get 1st with it running till I'd done the oil.

Having been riding a 2000 M600 which is >30k now, I can tell you that these bikes are actually great. With simple mechanics and very little electronic components they will never give you headache if you keep valve checks and oil replacements in time. Maybe they do lack the power of their bigger brothers but in the city traffic and on the back roads I have never felt this as an issue. You can keep up with the superbikes in the twisties. Highway riding is boring though. Check the usual stuff like the chain and sprocket condition, steering bearing may have rusted check that little bugger (you will feel some resistance when you turn the front left and right while stopping or low speed).. I can not even think of any other potential issues if the overall condition is fine it has probably been taken good care of and you will have a beautiful bike which is IMO a keeper.
