Thought about cartoon intros of the 80s/90s

Do you think that cartoons of the 80s and 90s put more emphasis on the intros than most modern cartoons? I mean, even if a show wasnt very good (like say, silverhawks), the intros were still consistently watchable. Im not putting down modern cartoons at all, and we do still have some excellent intros out there (ie, metalocalypse), but try comparing the epic B:TAS opening (or even the justice league (original, not JLU)) to batman: the brave and the bold, which actually puts more emphasis on the guest stars (i mean, who HASNT tried to freeze-frame the opening to try and read every name that makes up the building) then the actual star of the show.

It was to my knowledge that in the 80's cartoons began to flood television more than ever and they probably figured that if the show had a fancy intro and song that kids would take notice to them more so than others. Thats just my guess.

You mean cartoons of today, put little effort into their intros? I think that is because of time restrictions.

I have to reexamine the cartoons of the past, but as far as cartoon intros of today, anime pawns the western cartoons by far. It used to be debateable, but not anymore.

I did notice that show from the 80's and early 90's usually have a longer themesong. I don't think that it's today they aren't putting any effort into their themesongs, but like zoombie said earlier, they're restricted for time.

Considering cartoon intros nowadays are half as long as they were in the 80's and 90's and are largely generic?

Yes. The 80's and 90's were definitely better.

I read an article somewhere (probably online) talking about the death of the theme song. Has anybody else noticed that few shows today, animated or otherwise, have lyrics in their themes?

Intro's in the 80's & 90's rocked. they were betther then some modern anime openings in my openion. as for modern NA toons openings nowadays just seem genaric or lazy, although i must admit i enjoy the Total Drama & Transformers: Animated openings.

First i will say that i always preferred intros without lyrics, but there are exceptions.

My favorite cartoon intros range over a wide time range, from the 1967 Spiderman theme to modern ones like Ben 10 and Daria. There's no particular time which i have a greater amount i like to dislike. Having said that i haven't seen as much cartoons of the 80s as i have the 90s, the 90s as i have the 2000s, and thus i'm biased towards today in terms of my data.

Thus as i have only seen a few cartoons from before the 90s it's hard for me to say my opinion on the intros of their time. However from those i have seen it depends mostly on individual cartoons rather than their time, although i like some of the styles in some times more than others. However i think theres been some corkers in this decade, like the Fillmore! opening for instance, although perhaps of late they have been declining?

What are some of everyones favourite cartoon intro's? I really like the Ninja Turtles first cartoon intro, it had awesome music and lyrics that got you hyped for the show, the X-Men cartoon had a great intro too even though it didn't have any words, the music and the character scenes were amazing.

Cartoon intros were longer back in the 80's and 90's because back then there was still such a thing as syndication. Nowadays just about every animated show is part of some network or cable-based block of shows, the execs insist on shorter intros in order to make room for more ads.

I don't remember the themes for Gimmie Bears or Winnie the Pooh, but the Heathcliff theme is awesome! I loved the song and I heard it recently as a promo on a box set for some cartoon and it got stuck in my head all day.

My favorite western animated intro is not from 80's or 90's, or today. Hard press to find any intro that is as cool as the intro from Johnny Quest. Instrumental music with a good beat and just mindless violence, which didn't explain anything of what the plot of the show was, and it doesn't matter, it is just so cool.

The opening intros for some 80s/90s cartoons were so awesome and very catchy. It's too bad that there's not many opening intros in 2000s that are good as the ones in the 80s/90s with the exception of a few(Like Invader Zim) and some anime openings.

I wouldn't say that but I would say that the intro's would get you pumped up for the episode itself, although I have run into a case where the episode sucked and the intro was the only good thing about the show, but that didn't happen often for me.
