Crazy Ed: In America "Debate" and Compromise is supposedly "good" - at least that is the premise of those who created the Constitution.
Toxic Panduh: As an American citizen you buy into the idea of being an American. Along with that comes certain rights and responsibilities. If you cherish your freedom, it also goes the other way - respect, healthy debate & compromise. I would guess that the name calling, shouting over, gun toting folks are good examples of behavior that is objectionable to most reasonable people. An "anything goes" philosophy brings to 3rd world nation levels.
Bill G IV: Ayers is one person & one could say that he does not represent much but a small minority. There have been more than a "few" shouters as you state. (see above response to Panduh, please.)

Are we adopting a 3rd world mentality? Are we not better than this?

Political debate is not always polite and respectful in our country. It would be nice if it were otherwise.

But at least our political debates, no matter the emotions involved, don't turn into widespread violence like we see around elections in places like Iran and Afghanistan.

Let us be grateful for that.

decided they had enough of Roosevelt and conspired to overthrow the government. General Smedly Butler was the commadant of the marine corp.And he loathed Roosevelt and his policys. So the conspirators asked him if he would help them and be named Governer-General of the U.S. Well he suprised them.He didn't like Roosevelt but he disliked treason even more.So he turned them in.He was a true patriot.The 3 traitors were placed under house arrest for the duration of the war.Roosevelt needed their factories for the war.So we can get along with one another.We are all Americans and our behavior is disgusting.More moderates are needed on both sides.
 
How can we justify our behavior?

Here's the debate:
Little Barry and several of his bully friends cornered little Johnny and tells him to give them his lunch money so he can divide it up.
Little Johnny says, "No, it's my lunch money"!
Little Barry says, " If you don't give me your money, me and my friends are going to beat you up".

Here's the compromise:
The teacher says everyone must share!

Is that the compromise you're talking about?
