This Makes no Sense- Why is my Neck Hurting??

My neck problems started at the end of June with seemingly minor accident. I was in bed and banged the back of my head against the headboard. I don't remember the angle, but I wasn't sitting up.

Immediately, my neck got stiff, and I dealt with miserable neck pain for over a week. The neck pain disappeared, and I developed a new symptom of numbness in my finger tips. At that time, I was terrified that I had clogged arteries.

Then I s tarted reading up on Cubital tunnel syndrome. Finally went to my family doc. He ordered neck xrays, did some head motions. He didn't think anything was wrong with my neck or related to the hand problems.

The neck pain would return on and off, but mostly gone. I saw an orthopedist surgeon and he didn't think I had something wrong with the neck.

Then on 8/17, neck pain hit me out of nowhere at work giving me a bad headache. It has never gone away since then. Being a hypochrondriac, I can't stop thinking about it 24/7. afraid that I might have this miserable pain the rest of my life

I feel the back of my neck and it feels very tight. Is this normal or indicate that my muscles are very tense? I developed feel a lot of tension if I move my head far to the right or left. I've tried neck stretches and icing, but I never get 100%.

I can't afford a MRI scan as I don't have health insurance. I just want to stop worrying. Does my problem sound muscular? I wonder if stress is causing this. I do feel tightness in the upper shoulders soemtimestoo. Isi t a good sign that pain went away completely for almost half a month?

Hard to say if it's muscular or a disc in your neck. A pinched nerve in your disc will cause numbness in your fingers. The muscles in your neck and shoulders will tighten to protect your disc. Don't worry, the stress will only make the muscles tighten more. I'd go and see a physio, they are very good at diagnosing and treating this type of problem. You are very unlikely to have the pain for the rest of your life. Good luck.

this could actually be what the above poster staed or it could also be a combination of both a spinal and a muscular issue too. alot, and i mean alot of people just DO have underlying spinal issues going on in our spinal columns/cord but it just has not actually 'presented' itself with stronger types of symptoms til it gets 'hit' or something like a whiplash or other injury just brings it to light. you could very well have had some level of spinal problem within that c spine area that just did get kind of angry/irritated and inflammed at the beginning, you know what i mean?

unfortunetly the best test to really try and indentify what could be a possible trigger/reason for all you are feeling would be that MRI being done. i do feel for ya without having ins right now, its just sick really. but have you ever had at least a c spine series x ray done at all just to see the more obvious outside of the column problems that would show up on that particular scan? just obtaining that would at least show possible herniations, bulges or other possible problems as well as how your overall vertebral alignment actually is too.
you could possibly try a great therepy that i just have to use since i have a ton of constantly generating trigger points among other muscle related crap up in my c spine from a mess in there. its called myofascial release. this is the only therepy that i have actually tried out of many many different ones over the years that just actually hits those muscles and actually releases that overtightened and verry painful feeling i have there? as well as reducing and kind of dissolving these horrid huge TPs i keep getting from really angry spinal nerve signals that are from alot of c spine damage that just occur when you have "affected" spinal nerves that fire out to the muscles over and over again. this is just a wonderful therepy when you have any real muscle problems that can just cause alot of different symptoms in us.

but i would also at least obtain that look at the c spine area with an x ray right now just to check for those more obvious possible problems that can show up on x ray. if anything more significant is found there like a pronounced type of herniation going on, chances are the inner spinal is being impacted as well in some way too. hopefully at some point you can also obtain that inside peek into that spinal area as well with the MRI. but the x ray would be at least that 'look' at the outside and would show certain findings pretty clearly. its a start anyways and just sooo much cheaper than an MRI. just knowing what in the heck is responsible for ongoing symptoms inside our bodies helps alot in trying to find the best ways to treat things. i do wish you luck with this. please keep us posted dave, FB
