2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 auto trans. The most respected Jeep mechanic in my area couldn’t figure this one out. When applying the brakes with anything more than slight pressure, there is a scraping noise coming from somewhere around the left side of the trans. When I hit a slight bump at any speed, the same scraping occurs. It sounds like a brake pad is worn, and there is metal to metal. 4x4 works normally. There is no constant grinding when driving normally. ONLY when I hit the brakes or hit a bump. I removed the front drive shaft and the sound disappeared. There is no play in the shaft. The shaft was not touching anything. It wasn’t lose. There was nothing attached to it or wound around it. It did not get hit causing it to be out of alignment. There isn’t any visible damage. If it’s the CV joint (I haven’t taken it apart), why noise only under the above circumstances? Any ideas?
