im irish and i can tell the last thing the IRA did was inspire hope for the irish people, also your question is too ambiguous to really answer. the IRA has many different factions and forms throughout history. so i will try and answer as best as i can. the original IRA was first formed after the easter rising in 1916, during this rising, although a failure it triggered a series of events that would change public opinions of british rule forever. the people who fought in the rising were actually spat on and ridiculed by the dubliners for destroying their city, howver when the british army executed most of them in inhumane acts( actually tying the wounded solders that couldnt stand to chairs to shoot them) the people actually became motivated to form a new army...the IRA. once they gt independance the people howevr detested them more than ever for allowing the island to be split in two, causing the irish civil war. the ira largely abandoned the north after this, allowing the catholic minority to be persucuted by the protestant majority in the north. the new IRA that started the troubles was largely gang based and ultimately doomed( 60% of northern ireland was protestant unionist, wanted to remain aoart of the UK) the IRAs bigotry towards the protestant majority effectively garanteed that the north would never become independent. all the accomplished during the troubles was poverty and suffering. today the only real political movement that inspires hope in ireland is the easter rising, for their bravery and sacrifice for a new era of indepenance from the british. howver the label terrorist for the IRA is just a deception by the british, using the label to manipulate the attitudes to the nationalist minority(wanting irish unity) just like they do in the middle east whom want palestinian independance, the word terrorsit is just a buzz word, honestly was would george washington have been called by the british during the revoltionary war of independance?
