thinking of getting a Dell Inspiron 10 10.1" Netbook

Over the years I have tended to like Dell machines if I'm looking for a PC. More recently HP and Lenovo have a much better reputation, depending on the model.

This weekend I spent some quality time with an 11 inch Macbook Air. This is Apple's entry in the "very small notebook but it's not a netbook" form factor. The thing is small and light and feels like my iPad in my hands when it's closed. Since I prefer Apple gear, the MBA would be my "small and light" choice, but if I was considering a PC, I would definitely consider the Dell.

The netbook I currently have is an Acer Aspire One but it hasn't been powered on since April 3, 2010 when I got my iPad. I saw a newer Acer in Target or WalMart the other day and it looks like they are down to $250. If you are focusing on price, I doubt Dell will compete with Acer. If you are looking for better build, Dell, Lenovo or HP might be better options. If money is no object, go for the base ($999) 64GB SSD 11 inch Macbook Air. Shhhh, it's not a netbook but it's as small and light as a netbook. Shhhh!;)

I got my Dell Inspiron Mini 10" right before Christmas a year ago. I love it. It certainly doesn't replace my desktop, but for just sitting in front of the TV and surfing the 'net, it works great.

I'm sure every netbook has its drawbacks. For my Dell, the major one is its touchpad. I never could get the hang of it. I bought a wireless mouse (Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000) and haven't missed the touchpad at all. I'm also more of a keyboard person than a mouse person, so I like to use PageUp and PageDown. You have to press a function key with your left hand and then the arrow keys with your right hand to do a page up or down. But I suppose that's common with netbooks. A minor complaint.

Otherwise I love my netbook. The keyboard has a real nice feel and the monitor is crisp.

Do you any specific questions re the Dell mini?
