...for mental health conditions? Hello
I am a 22 year old female who is thinking about joining the marines once I complete my two year degree at a community college, probably a year and a half from now. I have spoken to many recruiters, three total over the past 4 years, about some mental health issues regarding severe depression that claimed me disabled for life when I was 16. The thing about this, is being a minor at 16 I could not fight the paperwork claimed and filed with social security because my father was in control of all my decisions in regards to treatment that I strongly believe I did not need. I was placed in many mental hospitals, about 4 times total. However one was for an inpatient treatment in another city far from my home in CA ( in other words, not for emergency services like suicide attempts or anything, but because the sacramento area was the nearest city for service coverage through my health insurance.) Now, not trying to be all emo or anything, as this is a crucial explanation: my father really messed up all my reputation in all of my mental health records, because he was a VERY cultural parent who went ahead and declared me disabled so he could try to get complete control of me later by having my mother sign a form to comply with his decision: his attempt to get full custody on me as a disabled dependant for LIFE. Fortunately his attempt failed when I turned 18 back then, but now being 22 I live away from both of them, which has sparked a major recovery, at one point without medecine. I am, however, slowly getting off of medication now, I am almost off completely. I will honestly say, however, I have been stuck on the disability income for about 5 years since then. My mental health has been much clearly defined now in a much more logical sense, that I am not in any way incapable of doing a job or living independently from the hold of my parents (hence the life custody issue.) So, what the last recruiter told me was if I could get off disability and recieve documentation from my doctor declaring how I do not depend on medication anymore for the most recent 6 months or more, it may be possible for me to attain a waiver for depression ( in the future if I can get off meds completely.) Although, I will say the first recruiter told me it wasn't possible, and the second said maybe. I am getting a lot of different answers from them, and I just want to know straight out now: is it possible? do I have any chance of getting in? or will the health records and disability declaration by my father possibly bar me from enlistment with permanent disqualification?
if anyone has any honest answers (I am willing to hear any, even if it is clear that I cannot make it into the branch, I just need to know the truth, clear and plain...) please post and let me know... any and all answers are greatly appreciated!
thank you for your time to read ; )
