Thinking about new phone/tethering...

Hey folks,

I am thinking about buying a new phone. (Aren't we all.) Currently, I have a Samsung i730 Windows Mobile 5 with Verizon. I used to run my own business and was frequently out quite a bit. Now I work _at_ home doing the same type of work, but need a PDA-phone less.

That said, I like some of the aspects of this phone. For instance, when my wife and I couldn't find the location of a store this Saturday, it was nice to be able to bring up Opera for WM and get the address from the store's website.

So, I'm wondering if a phone that would allow:

1. Lookup of telephone numbers/addresses;

2. The occasional tether to a computer for better web experience;

3. Is smaller than the PDA and has good RF reception

... is available?

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Mike...

I am really not sure about what phone would work for your needs because I have no personal PDA experience, but I would just like to throw in a suggestion. Shop around for the service provider that fits your needs best. A lot of people I know have Verizon and think that's the only option for good coverage. But Verizon plans are often the most expensive. Alltel has some very good data plans and so does Sprint among others. It just depends on where you live as to what other options you have. But if it's time for a contract change don't forget to shop around and maybe try out a 15-30 day trial.

That wouldn't be such a bad idea, except you can probably guess what I'm about to say. CONTRACT!!!!!!!!!

No, seriously, I would consider switching carriers. That's fine. My first choice would be Verizon since I am inside the contract until 08 anyway...

Another quick thought:

It seems like there are an awful lot of txting services that can get me the information I need. For instance, I know Yahoo! has a txt service where you can query for local shops and services with phone numbers.

Now, if I could only get maps via txting.... Do any of the carriers offer something like that?

So, the requirements would be bigger screen, good RF, txt-ability, and occasional tethering...

Well, VZW now has VZW Navigator which I'm really liking. It's a $9.99 monthly subscription for $2.99 for a 24-hour period. What's nice is you can search for a place by name, by type, etc., and not only does it bring up the directions to get there, but you can also call the location. It gives you turn by turn directions. I'm really enjoying it now during my free 15-day trial.
