Hey, I was browsing the threaRAB in this forum because I am thinking about using Accutane. I have been trying many things over the past year (to no avail), and the dermatologist has finally suggested Accutane. I was reading up on the side-effects and wondering if anyone has any personal thoughts about the medication itself or has any statistics about how often the more serious side effects occur. (I am a 15 year old male, if it makes a difference.) It seems like many of the Accutane users are happy with it. My mom got a worried look on her face when the doctor suggested it... :O

Hi, it's good stuff, although, in the beginning weeks, your acne would appear worse, and there are also side affects, dry lips......(just read the pamphlets) but it's all worth it. I just haven't finish my course, and having very satisfying results and waiting for more priscribed......well, it seems to be the only thing works for me....

Thanks for the reply. Have you (or anyone else, for that matter) had any experience with Accutane pertaining to the raised blood sugar or supposed "depression" side-effect? I'm guessing these would be the effects my mother are worried about most. Although, from what I've read on this forum, it seems as if it is pretty smooth sailing (other than the mild/common side-effects)...

I don't know if you saw my thread, but here's a link in case:

My son did experience a worsening in the first few weeks, but once that settled down, the result was amazing. I wish he would have let me take pictures of before and after, but he didn't want to.

After the first 4 weeks, he had his blood drawn again and there was no rise in blood sugar or cholesterol so far. I haven't noticed any depression or moodiness, at least nothing aside from the normal teenage moodiness, LOL. ;)

Ahhh this is good.

I read from multiple sources that the acne appears to worsen in the beginning weeks (and SophD mentioned it in this thread :)). I like hearing that there was no changes in mood or blood sugar with your son.

A while back (years and years ago) my brother was asked if he wanted to take Accutane. He did a lot of research apparently and decided not to use it. I should ask him what he found out. I think I might go for it, though, since people seem to have good experiences with it here.

I'm more tired than usual during my course of Accutane...but I don't know if that's the medication, or my increased workload with school, work, Coast Guard Auxiliary and dance this year...

My cholesterol went from about 170 to 243 in a month. I've been on a low fat, low cholesterol diet now for a few months, and it's been pretty steady around 215. It's definitely gotten me eating healthier!

Normal side effects (that they tend to fail to mention so much): DRY LIPS (I am never without my Aquaphor), dry skin (I randomly get scaly dry patches whenever my dosage is upped), dry ears (it was so ITCHY), dry hair (not quite as bad for guys...), dry eyes (the derm finally upped me to the dosage I'm supposed to be at and my eyes burned SO badly, I couldn't get the drops in often enough) and probably the worst, dry nose (I've had to put moisturizing cream in my nose with a q-tip every night or I get bloody noses).

As a last resort, Accutane is reasonable, as it can prevent life long scaring..... if you arnt getting scaring, it might be better to persevere with topical Retin A and Benzoyl Peroxide, one in the morning and one at night
